View Full Version : Waterbased stain (i think): how to clean brushes

bought some stain at Ikea and DH threw away the directions. Wondering what I use to clean the brush. any ideas?

If it's waterbased, hot sudsy water should do. I also wrap my brushes in saran wrap when they're still damp - helps prevent drying out of the bristles.

Sounds right to me. If it's already dried to the brush, it may not come out except with a wire brush (like a toothbrush with metal bristles) and lots of warm water (always brush in a downwards motion, and avoid washing the stain into the handle of the brush by shooting water away from the handle). You only need mineral spirits if the stain is oil-based enamel or has a urithane, and its ingredients only state water, linseed oil and pigments.

Yup, like Pam said, if it's waterbased, then you can just wash it w/ warm water and soap if needed. Much easier to clean than oil based stuff!

thanks ladies! followed your instructions. I guess ALL of the stuff doesn't come out of the brush, right? It's still a little sticky.
