Anyone have and iPod shuffle?

I have a question. If anyone has a shuffle and can help, or even direct me to an iPod help site, I'd appreciate it! Simple question...can you add one song at a time, or do you have to update all the songs every time you want to add one? As far as I can tell, every time I just try to add one song, ONLY that one song ends up on the iPod. So I have to update them all. Am I making sense?

I have an ipod shuffle. When I update it, I just drag and drop (in the Itunes program) onto the Ipod from whatever playlist I'm using. I haven't had this action actually replace the existing songs on the ipod, though, so I'm not sure what's going on with yours.
