I just heard that students from Tulane are being re-routed to other universities for the semester, how cool! From what I heard, the students are going to either GA Tech or Dallas.

My brother and his roommate (students at GA Tech) signed up to host one of the Tulane students at their (way-too-posh-for-college-students) apartment.

I hope our southern hospitality can make these kids feel at home despite the tragedy they're already endured!

Good for your brother!

We're doing some of this at the University of Virginia too, mainly to help students from Virginia who are enrolled at other universities in the affected areas. I know that the American Association of Universities (AAU) is working on plans and I think the American Counil on Education (ACE) is doing so too.

I work at UVA and got an e-mail from the parents of a displaced Tulane student this morning inquiring about coming here as a visiting student. We're trying our best to accommodate these folks. Every little bit counts.

Good for your brother! That's pretty cool. Unfortunately, I still haven't heard from my post-doc friend at Tulane, but I'm hoping he's safe at home in OK with his family. But if they're rerouting students from Tulane, I wonder where the post-docs and profs will go!?

Eileen,
They didn't really talk about it in this morning's article in the newspaper, but they did show this pic and caption:

"Ahana Bose feeds her 4-month-old daughter at the Georgia Tech Student Center as her husband, a Tulane University professor, meets with Tulane and Georgia officials."

Wow, I hope they figure everything out! In any case, it's not going to be an easy transition for any of them!

are taking Tulane students as well. Columbia Law is taking a few law students and waving tution for the fall I think. I hope other schools (including mine) step up. Heck, we'd have a student or two stay with us if need be...

THat is awesome! I was hoping someplace would do this. I was about to start my freshamn yr at Univ of Miami when hurricane Andrew hit it 92 and had a bit of Deja-vu when hearing about these students who moved into their dorms Sat and evacuated SUnday! We only had minimal damage though and school started 3 weeks late. I can't imagine the chaos down there....

Sounds like my school (in the Chicago suburbs) will be picking up students, too.

Our president sent out a memo suggesting that we take the kids, they pay us tuition at their "home" rate, we give that money to the home school, we give them a room, they pay for meals, etc. He's hoping other associated colleges will do the same...

Hopefully any student that wants to will find a place to study this fall!

Gosh, I didn't even think about Tulane! What a college experience! I'm glad they will all have places to go.

I know that two of my universities are opening their doors to LA students: Rice University (b-school) and UH Law. UH & UH Law is offering in-state tuition to students and Rice is offering to allow Tulane students into classes on a space available basis. Rice is also giving away tickets to football games and fund/food raising in the immediate future.

I'm proud of these universities for opening their arms to our neighbors. I just wish they didn't have to. I feel so bad for those from LA; they've been devastated. I hope some of the students are able to take advantage of the offers.

My student bar association is meeting this week; maybe our law school will be able to do even more for the victims. Please pray if you're so inclined. Thanks.

A friend's son who was just getting to Tulane is coming home tonight. I don't think he was given this choice but he was a freshman. He must be so upset to have just arrived and had to turn right back, but at least he is safe!

Penn is taking up to 100 undergrads for free (tuition fees to be routed to Tulane to help the recovery. But no housing is available. Ugh. No word yet on the law school.

Harvard Law taking a few law students as well.

I'm not sure if Tulane is able to get the word out to their students right now, but your friend's son should start contacting other universities, near home I guess, right away if he wants to go somewhere else for the time being. Some schools, like the one where I work, have started classes already so he should act quickly. I think universities around the country are really trying to help these students.

HTH!

In case it could help anyone, there is a big ad from Loyola University in today's Chicago Tribune letting students from Tulane and Loyola University New Orleans know that they are welcome to attend in Chocago.
