Is anyone interested in a thread that lists businesses that are supporting Katrina victims? I was just thinking that if we're going to be making purchases anyway, we might prefer to make them from places that are providing aid. Anyway, I just heard of one and thought I would share. If you know of others, please post.

Knitters, WEBS in Northampton, MA (which also has an online store)is donating 10% of its sales to Katrina relief efforts. Here's the email about it:

From: Webs - America's Yarn Store
Subject: Webs will donate 10% of sales to Hurricane Katrina
relief

Dear Customers, over the past couple of days, all of here at
WEBS have been moved by the devastation that Hurricane Katrina
has brought the Gulf Coast. The magnitude of this tragedy is
overwhelming. We met with our team here and we all agree that
we need to do something.

So, starting today, for the next 10 days, we will donate 10%
of
all purchases to the American Red Cross. If you order
on-line,
over the phone or shop in our Northampton store, 10% of your
purchase, through September 10th, will be given to the
hurricane relief efforts of the Red Cross. There is nothing
special you have to do, just shop.

We hope you will join with us in supporting this very
worthwhile cause for the people who have lost so much across
the Gulf Coast States.

That's a great idea!

Tykiediapers.com is donating 20% of all her sales of instock items (from Friday through Sunday) to the American Red Cross.

Wegmans Markets (grocer based in Rochester, NY) is donating $100,000 to the American Red Cross and is accepting voluntary donations from customers which will also be donated to the Red Cross. (They did the same for Tsunami relief earlier this year.)

I'm not a huge Walmart fan, but I have been impressed by their $2 million donation to the American Red Cross directly for Hurricane Katrina Disaster Relief. They've also been directing their own trucks to take food, ice, and water to areas in the affected region.

This isn't something we can impact ourselves, but here's a list of donations being made by corporations:

My husband's company, BOC Group, a British company, announced today that they were matching employee donations 2 to 1 for Katrina Relief. (I guess the list on CNN/FN's website isn't an exhaustive list.)

I just got an email from iTunes via Apple Computers encouraging everyone to donate and providing a link to do so quite easily.

The Pampered Chef has a 15 year partnership with America's Second Harvest Food Bank (ASHFB). With their "Round Up from the Heart" program, they have donated over $10 million dollars over the past 15 years by asking customers to round up their order totals to the next nearest dollar amount.

In the wake of Katrina, The Pampered Chef has already made a cash donation to ASHFB's hurricane relief fund. And for the month of September, the company will match all customers round up donations, with the matched amount going to the hurricane relief fund.

So if you are invited to a show, go, place an order, and round it up!

I know mine is matching the first 25K contribuited by employees to selected charities--so you still get to choose your charity, but your contribuition is essentially doubled.

We didn't make it on the CNN list yet:

The internal discussion I read yesterday focused quite a bit on the folks we have working in two plants down there.

For anyone that buys from Melaleuca (melaleuca.com), they will match any donation you give, dollar for dollar.

another on line diaper store is donating also. www.kellyscloset.com has 2 different raffles going on, they are 10$ for a "ticket" and all the money raised from the buying of tickets is going towards katrina victims. if you win, the prizes are HUGE!

Do you know of any organizations taking the knitted items. I mean I'm sure there are babies and others who need blankets. I know my mom donates locally (in LA, CA), but what about anyone collecting knitted items. Obviously with it being summer it's not the best time, but people may be out of stuff for a long time. Just wondering if I should start knitting my a$$ off?

I'm knitting for Katrina babies, too. I don't know of anyone taking things offhand, although I posted offers on both Knitter's Review and MDC to collect knitted items and to make sure they get to Katrina families. You can PM me if you'd like to send something. If you prefer to send directly, I think the most immediate resources are likely to be in Houston and Baton Rouge where shelters are being set up.

I have to actually go buy yarn to start, but I will definitely tell my mom who does this all of the time. Of course she's out of town right now so maybe she'll know of someplace to send. I'll let you know.
