Our Ped suggested that we take Isabella off her Zantac every few months to see if she still had reflux and still needed her medicine. The last time we tried, the pain and crying resumed within a few days so we knew she still needed it and we immediately put her back on the Zantac.

She has now been off of Zantac for 4 days now. The spitting up returned (only the first 2 days) as well as the burping up air/acid but she is not fussy at all. My MIL who is a Gastro nurse (for adults) said that since some of the sympotms returned Isabella may still have reflux and that the acid may damage her esphogus (sp?) even is she isn't crying or uncomfortable.

Since neither my MIL nor our Ped specializes in reflux in babies, who can I ask? Any thoughts? TIA~

PS- DH has reflux and has to take medicine every day so I worry that Isabella's relfux may do damage if I don't take care of it properly.

I would take her to a ped GI doc. A good friends' son has had reflux since he was born and is now 3 and still sees a ped GI. He's had two endoscopies over the years to monitor his condition and check for damage. Your MIL is right though - it's possible that it's returned even though she's not crying.

i second the trip to a ped gi. both my ds had reflux and with my older ds his tends to hang around and he is on and off meds, but has been off for almost a year now. my younger ds was on them for a while and then when he came off of them he was fine. the gi can help alot with if they still have it or not. even if they dont cry or seem uncomfortable they may still need meds, my boys did.

IMHO- She is still really young to have 'outgrown'it. FWIW my DS had it until almost 2 and many others I knew lasted at least that long. I'd put her back on it until you can find a good Ped GI. I really don't think keeping her on it an extra month (even if the reflux is all the way gone) while you wait to find a specialist & have her tested will harm her in anyway.

I agree. My daughter got into trouble because she had silent reflux, and there was damage to her esophogus before we figured out what was going on. If you're seeing any symptoms, she's refluxing. Don't take chances.

At nearly three and a half, Abigail still occasionally needs medication for reflux. She's not on it regularly anymore, but she's still teething, and cutting a tooth or getting sick will almost always aggravate her reflux. I respond quickly when that happens rather than risk getting us into the kind of cycle she was in in her babyhood.
