I think my 17 month old is sleeping too much! DS has never been a good sleeper, but I'm kind of concerned at how much DD is still sleeping. She generally sleeps from 7:30 pm to 7:00 am with one waking around 5:30 or 6:00 to nurse. She then goes back down for a nap around 9:30 and sleeps from 2-3 hours. Around 2:00 she takes another nap that can last 2-3 hours as well. Basically, on any given day, she's getting at minimum 16 hours, and some days up to 18 hours of sleep. This really seems excessive to me. She had gone down to around 14-15 hours at one point, but her naps have really lengthened in the past few days. When she is awake, she's energetic and happy and active. If I try to skip a nap, she's crabby, lethargic, and, well, sleepy!

We don't go in to the ped for another month, and he already thinks I'm kind of nuts (wonder why? :P ), so I hate to call him about this.

Anybody else have a sleepy kid? Am I worrying over nothing? As nice as it is to have a napper, it's getting hard to leave the house!

I wish I had your problem :) my son (almost 21 months) gets one nap for about 1.5 - 3 hours then sleeps about 8 hours a night. He sleeps like me, rather than his father, sigh. If you are worried, call your Ped, trust your judgement.

Sage went through a long phase where he slept a lot. He would sleep around 14 hours straight through the night. He would then take a 2 - 3 hour nap in the afternoon. He eventually outgrew it. :(

I wouldn't stress over it.... just enjoy it! She'll outgrow it. Now I'm lucky if he gets 9 - 10 hours in a day.

Well, if this is abnormal, then DS leads the pack. He has always had 2-3 long naps during the day, and has slept 10-12 hours per night since he was less than 3 months old...

At 20 months (how did he get so OLD?), he sleeps from 8pm to 7:30am, naps from 10-12, and naps again from 3-5. Sometimes he'll miss either his morning or afternoon nap, but he's not a happy camper those times. So that's fifteen or so hours of sleep a day, minimum. I think 17 hours is in the realm of normal :)

It's probably okay. I will mention that when Kaya was still nursing during the night, she needed longer and more nap time. When she dropped the nursing sessions, her naps didn't need to be as long. These days, when she has a restless night for some reason, she'll usually make it up in the next two days with longer naps on each day (she no longer has 2 naps). If your DD is energetic, happy, and active when she's awake, I would say that she just needs more sleep than most. It would be interesting to see what happens when she drops your last "night-time" nursing session.

Me too. DS is taking one nap and sleeps 8 hours at night.

Jeanne, I agree with Eileen on this one -- if Eleanor seems happy and energetic when she's awake, she probably just needs more sleep than average. Ishie is down to one nap most days, but the past week or so (and any time he's sick or has a growth spurt) he's been either taking two naps or going to bed 3-4 hours earlier than usual in the evening.

Maybe she's going through a growth spurt and just needs the extra sleep. Conner was sleeping up to 13 hours a night (I was waking HIM up for the day at 10am!) and then he was taking up to a 4 hour long nap! This was a few months ago and he also seemed to gain about 3lbs in a very short amount of time so I think it was just a growth spurt. He's back to sleeping an average of 11 hours a night and taking 3 hour naps (which is normal for him). So during that growth spurt period, he was sleeping an extra 3 hours a day. He has always been extremely active during his awake times which is why I never worried about it.
