I have been to one myself for back pain, but have never taken ds, even though mine has been begging me to bring him. DS has nasal congestion and a cough that has been there since 4 mos old and has tubes in his ears d/t chronic fluid buildup. A couple of friends have suggested that I take him to one. When I mentioned it to dh yesterday, he flipped! He basically said that I was not to take ds to a quack! and he would rather continue medicating him (which isn't working). So has anyone been and what has been your experience, good or bad?
Thanks,

I took Jack for several visits when he was having frequent ear infections. His ears got better but am not certain whether it was from the chiro treatments or because we figured out he was dairy allergic. I took him to my chiro who was vry good with him but seemed a bit nervous because he was such a little peanut.
Do you breastfeed? We also put 2 drops of ebm in each ear twice a day for preventative measures. It was recommended here and very supported by the chiro. I did not tell our family practitioner we were doing this because he already thinks I'm a little "out there".

Well, Kaya gets adjusted out once a month as a preventative thing. I don't know how well it works, but she does seem to get over illnesses and such easier than her friends. But she's also nursing, so maybe that has something to do with it? But even my cousin's son, who was nursing for at least a year, was getting all sorts of the worst illnesses. I remember she took him in for cranial sacral treatments and that really seemed to help him, but she hadn't done that for a while when he was getting sick all the time.

I will also mention that a few times when Kaya has been tugging on her ear a lot, especially during nursing, when she gets adjusted, it always seems to improve very quickly. So I guess our experiences have all been pretty positive. But DH and I also get adjusted ourselves for our neck (and DH's back) and we've felt much better in general every since we've done that. Is it all in our head? Not sure, but anyway, you asked. :)

I haven't taken DS. I'm definitely more on the holistic side of things, but my background as physical therapist leads me to recommend being very careful about who adjusts your DC. Not all chiros are comfortable or proficient at dealing with small children, and I'd be very careful about who I took DC to for that reason. I think a very skilled chiropractor who is knowledgable about treating kids can be a great asset, but one without a solid knowledge of issues pertaining to kids can be a bad thing IMHO.

Like any profession, there are good and bad practitioners. Just be cautious in who you choose. Just my two cents ;)

Thanks for all the replies! DS was breastfed until 11 months when he self-weaned. His problems started well before then though. I do worry about how to choose a chiropractor, but found a website for children and chiropractics with a practitioner close to me who is recommended by them.

Ds has gone at least weekly since he was about 18 months old. We started going for his chronic fluid-filled and often-infected ears. However we all feel so much healthier b/c of our regular adjustments.

Ds has only had one ear infection, now, since we've been going and it happened to come the month we missed three weeks of treatment.

I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone and everyone. Just make sure you find a chiro who is used to work with children. One place to look would be www.icpa4kids.org.

LMK if you have any questions. I don't know what to say about your Dh, there is definitely a population out there who feels they are not legitimate, but I wouldn't know what to say to them since it is just common sense to me that your body cannot operate efficiently if the nerves are pressed from an out-of-alignment neck or spine.

ETA: Ds quite likes his adjustments and always has. Our chiro is good with children. She's already adjusted our new little one twice and I am so glad to know about this from the start with her. Even the most gentle birth (water) can leave their neck and/or spine out of alignment.

That link has great links to research about kids and chiropractic, too. We have taken Abigail since she was five days old. She loves to go, and she rarely gets sick.

Hmm...I'll have to share the link with my chiropractor. He's not a pediatric chiro specifically, but he did adjust kids in school, and of course he's adjusted his kids since day 1. He does really well with Kaya and she really seems to enjoy her adjustments. :) The closest pediatric chiro to our place, according to this site, is about 25 miles away, so that's not really a great option for us, especially because we've been fortunate to find someone who does do well with Kaya. :)

But I totally agree (and so does my chiro), you do want to make sure you get someone who is not a "quack"--just like doctors, PTs, etc., there are good ones and there are not so good ones.

Anyone know of a good chiro for kids in the north metro Atlanta area or know of someone that might?

No idea (i.e. no personal experience), but Melanie's link pops up with several chiros in the Atlanta area:
