IIRC, this failed last week, as the legislator withdrew it, but was absolutely ridiculous on the face of it!!!! Too Handmaid's Tale for my liking.

Makes me oh so proud to be a Hoosier (NOT!)

ETA: I was referring to the original post of the proposed bill, not that it was withdrawn... Also to note that the Indianapolis Star buried the original story on page B5!!!

I just want to say how appaling I think this is. I know in the end it was dropped, but to think that it was even on the table is just too much.

Here's what I'd tell them. I have 1 DS and another on the way. I have an older brother who is gay. Guess who's raising my children if DH & I G-d forbid perish? That's right my gay brother and his boyfriend. Being gay and being a loving parent do not have anything to do with each other. Can you see me sticking my tongue out at the politicians who say stupid things like this? :P

Wow, it is hard to believe that it was even being considered!

Again - Wow!

This is way too Big Brother for me - very scary. I am glad to hear the bill was dropped but to even bring this up is just wrong on so many counts. I know many gay/lesbian people who are and would be great parents and in some cases better parents than some heterosexual married couples. Same goes for singles.

Did you also notice the bill said something about asking about a married couple's employment, education, child care plans and participation in faith-based or church activities? Is the intention there to eventually prevent a married couple from using assisted reproduction if they aren't religious, if they plan on returning to work after the baby is born, if they don't have a college degree, etc.? Well, me and my husband might have been denied our beautiful (IVF) daughter which we love dearly because we don't practice a particular faith.

It reminds me of the bill from Virginia that was also dropped that made women have to report a miscarriage or stillbirth to the police within 24 hours or else they would be charged with felony.

well, simple birth control (the pill) was in fact illegal not so long ago, and people got prosecuted for prescribing birth control even to married couples....
