I've never done this before, but I'm having Jack carry one of the UNICEF boxes with him for Trick or Treat. So, it's not just about candy but helping other kids.

That was big when I was a kid. I believe we all got the boxes in school. I'm glad kids are still doing it.
So cute that your little guy's Trick-or-Treating!

Thanks for mentioning this. Ds is 2 but it's never too early to teach compassion. I'll definitely be picking one up. For anyone who didn't click on the link, you can pick up a Unicef box at IKEA or Pier 1.

Although UNICEF does many good things, it does have its own agenda as well. Just want to let you know UNICEF is not all about compassion. In fact, they want to stop international adoption. Unicef believes that children should stay in the country of their birth regardless of their situation. They are lobbying very hard to implement the Hague Treaty (which had lots of good points) but with a definite angle to stop Americans from adopting abroad. I would never let my children collect for Unicef and don't support them in any way.

Thanks for the link.
I ordered some.

For anyone interested, here's UNICEF's statement on international adoption: http://www.unicef.org/media/media_15011.html

I've been researching this a lot as we are planning to start the adoption process soon.

Thank you Michele - I will look into this further before making a decision. My ds was adopted domestically and I have many friends who have adopted children internationally, so the subject is close to home.

Last year DS carried a box for FAAN (Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network). Most people were fine with throwing in a few coins, a few people gave him dollars, but some people were extremely rude. I mean come on, here was a 1 yr old lil guy dressed like a big fluffy chicken who didnt have a goodie bag but instead proudly held out his box and yelled "tweat (treat)"....how could you not throw in even a couple pennies...

I agree with Michelle. I believe that UNICEF started out as a wonderful organization to help children, but like so many other organizations, has become a behemoth that is more concerned with pushing its own political agenda, than helping those who need it the most.

I know I have posted this link before, but I believe it bears repeating: http://www.geocities.com/familieswithoutborders/index.htm
What UNICEF has been trying to do in Guatemala (and what they have managed to do in other countries)is appalling and I will not support them in any way.
