Hi folks.
We are kicking around a few ideas here for how to provide our content online in the future. As you know, right now we make a living selling our book in paper form and then providing this web site as a free community for our readers.
Some folks have asked us to put our content online---that is, the reviews of car seats, cribs, strollers, etc.
So, we have two basic choices and wanted to get your feedback. We will be posting a poll here later today to gauge your interest. Here are the two paths:
A. Monthly subscription. In order to access our reviews online, we would charge a small monthly fee (say, $5 a month or $26 annually). Our goal would be to personalize the content for you---knowing your child's birthdate, we could provide updates/tips/advice on what you are probably considering purchasing. One advantage: we could update the reviews more frequently to capture the latest parent feedback.
B. Piece by piece. This is the iTunes model--you buy a single song instead of the whole album. That is, you would buy a single chapter of our book (say car seats) for a low price (99¢ to $1.99) in electronic form (probably a PDF). Or you could buy the entire book as a PDF.
So, which would you prefer?
We know some folks would answer "C", none of the above! We want it all for free! Well, that isn't going to happen unless we take ads and sponsors for our site, which we don't want to do for obvious reasons (namely, it's hard to review products objectively if you have a sponsor breathing down your neck).
Either way, rest assured that most of our site (the message boards, blog, etc) will remain free and open to all.
So, watch for the poll shortly and tell us what you think!
