For those of you using the Firefox browser - I found this information at the Afterdawn forums regarding speeding up your webpage loading/browsing significantly. This only is applicable to the Firefox Internet browser. I followed the instructions and it's simply amazing how much faster Firefox is now when surfing.

quote:

Here's something for broadband people that will really speed Firefox up:

1.Type about:config into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

network.http.pipelining
network.http.proxy.pipelining
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

2. Alter the entries as follows:

Set network.http.pipelining to true

Set network.http.proxy.pipelining to true

Set network.http.pipelining.maxrequests to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it nglayout.initialpaint.delay and set its value to 0 (zero). This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it recieves.

If you're using a broadband connection you'll load pages MUCH faster now!

You have to close your browser after you make the changes. When you start it back up they will be in effect.

For Mac users:
I was able to get through most of it, but, since I don't have a right-click button (gotta get one of those mice!), how do I do the nglayout bit?

Thanks, Bill, for the OP!

Hold ctrl key down and use regular mouse button, that acts like a right-click.

Go to Best Buy, and spend the $20 on a Logitech mouse. ;) Sorry, couldn't resist.

Thanks, Bill!

I just updated Firefox, and it reminded me about this thread. The configurations should still be in effect for those of you who just updated your browser like I did, but I'm bumping this up for you Firefox users who joined since Bill started this thread in Nov, '05.
