C'mon everyone - let's get some good baby brags going, to cheer us all up after a crap-tastic week both IRL and online!

Me first: we have an afternoon b-day party to go to today, at ChuckE.Cheese, which is a good hour drive away. It starts at 1pm, and will totally conflict with DS's regular nap, so I asked him at 9:30 to take his nap early, so we could go to the b-day party and eat pizza. He went to his room, asked for his paci, and went to sleep. I know I sort of bribed him with pizza, but knowing it can be done is GREAT.

Bring on the shameless bragging!!!

Wow, that is a good one, I can't believe he did that!

OK, mine is about me - I lost 10 pounds on the Eat to Live diet, starting running again, signed up for a 5k Turkey Trot, and I am only 10 pounds away from the weight I was when I got married, and I definitely expect to be there by the time Christmas is here.

Okay, I'll play - twist my arm! Rory can identify all of her letters and numbers, and can recite from 1-10 without prompting, but she hasn't actually counted items past 3, and we haven't even tried because it seems early for that.

At the airport the other day, she was pointing out all of the letters and numbers she saw, and then out of the blue she started saying excitedly "Five Peas! Five Peas!!" She was in the sling and wriggling like a madwoman, so I had to contort myself to see what she was saying...

She was pointing to a sign that said: "Passenger Parking. Short Term Parking. Long-term Parking. Passengers Only."

Five Ps. I couldn't believe it.

Thanks for asking, Petra - a happier topic indeed!

Wow, what great brags.

We are going through a tough stage right now so we don't have any good behavior brags, or any good intellectual ones here. The most surprising (and gosh-how-embarrassing to me) thing DS has done recently is when we pulled into the parking lot of the grocery store/strip mall, he said "Starbucks". There is a Starbucks on the opposite side of the lot from the store, and no sign that he could have seen from the car. I guess we go there a little too often, since he knows where several other Starbucks locations are as well when we go past, even before you can see the sign.

As we drive home-usually from daycare Jack says the names of the streets that we turn on so far he knows the last 3 streets and our house number. He'll say-"see where we are? It's 'blank' street." and then when we get to our road he'll say "it's the bumpy road-number 20 xyz street."
I love to watch him swing-he pumps so hard on the swing. I cannot believe how high he gets himself swinging. It scares the heck out of me.
He has a perfect golf swing. DH filmed it today. I wish I could show you all. He keeps his eye on the ball and follows through and turns his upper body and eventually leaving just the toe of one foot on the ground. I looked at DH and said "where the heck did he learn that little leg move?" DH thinks he's copied it from watching the pros on tv. Pretty crazy. Oh and he hits a mean drive, too.
Anna is almost sitting up on her own. She smiles all the time. I felt like a dummy with her in the ER yesterday for an ear infection. I described her as really cranky and the DR walked in the room and she gave him a huge scrunch up your face grin.

Awesome thread, Petra. I hearby dub you BBB Cheerleading Captain of the week. You're holding the Spirit Stick!

I love reading these threads and congratulate all of you!

Jazzy is in a parroting phase. It is so much fun to hear here copying our words. She loves to give kisses to things and people. She had been leaning over and silently touching them with her pursed lips. Occasionally she would add an "mmmm." Today though she learned to make smacking noises, like "mwa mwa mwa." Ahhhhh JOY!

BTW, Petra, Dh and I have you partly to blame for having the Zoboomafoo theme song in our heads! Jazz constantly asked to see the "monk" yesterday, so we had to keep rewinding and replaying the theme part with the jumping lemur! :P

Wow, I wish I could get Ela to take a nap like that!

Ela knows her colors and all the letters of the alphabet. She also spoke her first "sentence" in Polish, which translated is "Casper (our cat) has a tail and mama doesn't have a tail." :)

I can't remember if I bragged about this before (I've been bragging IRL about it a ton LOL!) but dd makes "literary references" all the time. Examples: Going for a walk in the woods she announced, "like the three bears!" Putting honey in our yogurt, "Pooh likes honey, too!" She often says excitedly, "oh, like the book!" in response to anything that reminds her of a story. It's so cool to see her little brain making connections!

About the naps - that is one heck of an accomplishment!

Great thread, Petra!

My DS has had a few major breakthroughs in the last few days. He has started crawling (today), pulling himself up on one foot and one knee (last week), clapping his hands together palm-to-palm (yesterday), waving goodbye/hello (last week) and giving kisses (last week). He's also getting *really* good at self-feeding with Gerber Puffs and TJs Os. It's so much fun to watch him when he realizes that he can do something new on his own. He is just so delighted. DH and I are both having the time of our lives watching him grow and learn. :)

I wish I could take the credit, but she got the letters from her books; we have a few alphabet books, which we bought when she started to point to letters and ask what they were.

The numbers she got from a combination of the "Ten, Nine, Eight" book we've been reading since she was an infant, and the fact that since she was four months old, we've been counting to ten as a way of ending an activity she's enjoying before moving on. Somewhere along the way, she picked it up; it wasn't like we sat down and "played" letters and numbers or anything.

I'm not averse to teaching her things, but we've been concentrating on signing and on learning limits all this time. Other than that, we pretty much just answer her questions and reinforce what we've told her along the way.

(Edited b/c it sounded kinda obnoxious & I didn't mean it to be! :))

Great thread Petra! DS had been going through a verbal explosion lately parotting everything we say (note to self....must censor when I get frustrated) and recently picked up a two word phrase: "I do!" whic he uses for everything now. Not as awesome as taking a nap when bribed but he's been late on the verbal front so we're ecstatic! :)

I'm sure this is some kind of accomplishment, at the very least it was cute. We have a very healthy but lazy kitty, Zoe. Recently she and DD have been getting along a little better (read: DD is feeding Zoe table scraps). DD is not allowed in the office where Zoe's litter pan and food (and the computer) are. So we have a baby gate up. Well, often Zoe will sit by the gate and meow instead of jumping over (which she is fully capable of doing). So yesterday, DD went over to help her. First, she attempted to lift the handle on the gate, which she couldn't budge. Then she attempted to turn the knobs to get the gate to open. I can only imagine she has seen DH or I adjusting the gate that way. Since she couldn't get the gate open she proceeded to pick the cat up (who isn't that small!) and tried to lift her over the gate. Zoe didn't get very far up, but she decided to stop being lazy and jumped over herself after that! lol My little She-ra!

I envy you Petra! That is so fabulous!!!

Wow! The nap thing is amazing! I can't imagine that happening here.

As for DS (thanks for permission to brag!), he sings the abc song -- although he doesn't hit all the letters. He also counts pretty well. He loves it when the Teletubbies pop out of their house ("One! Doo! Doo! Fow!" Yes, he counts "two" twice. It is his favorite number). He recognizes some written numbers, too, but not letters yet that I know of.

He also recognizes stop signs everywhere when we are driving around -- and shouts out "DOP!!!"

Mostly I am proud that he is nice kid. At day care he will pick up another kid's dropped paci and give it back. He shares well, esp. for a toddler. He puts toys away when asked (with help), and he gives the sweetest kisses ever. He will also poke your nose and say "BEEEEEEEP!" I love that.

PT related- early this week (or was it last week?) Toby started using the toilet or the potty chair for *all* of his needs rather than waiting until his night time diaper to have a bm. Such a relief to nat have any diapers to rinse out before washing! He even woke up one morning and announced his intention to "take diaper off...need potty".

When Miss Lynn at Gymboree started the "Clean up! Clean up!" song, Aubrey toddled toward the bucket with the two balls she'd been carrying, plus managed to grab a third en route. She dropped them all in. Of course, then she almost fell in on her head, trying to retrieve them! LOL!

But mainly the last two weeks have been totally Helen Keller, as she figures out words. This is such a magic age.

Petra- thank you! I think we all needed such a sweet list of accomplishments to read over!!

Mamas- You all have some amazing kiddos.

OK... now my turn! Abigail is absolutely exploding with her English vocabulary and I am working with her on her Spanish a little every day. She can rote count to 15 in english, 10 in Spanish, she is starting to be able to communicate in sentences, and other people are starting to understand her without me translating every word. She can also clearly say her first name now!!!

an aside- she is language delayed and due to some crappy setbacks with my divorce, moving, and turning 3 she has yet to actually start speech therapy. So all of these steps in language are huge leaps to us. Her school is expecting speech therapy to start this month. We have a long road ahead, but she is trying her best to be heard.

Ahhhhh!!! Being a parent is the best/hardest job in the world!!!!

It's still amazing and very cute. :)

Kaya can do a mushy "one" a clear "two" and a "thwee". She does it when she wants me to do something fun that requires counting like one, two, three, toss her in the air. :)

And no letters for sure!

ETA: Oh, and by the way, this *is* a bragging post, so brag away! :)

Aww...the kissing thing is so wonderful isn't it?! Kaya didn't learn that until later. But one thing I do love is that when I'm nursing her, I'll often say, "I love you," and kiss her on the head. So one time I said, "Lambie loves you," and she popped off, grabbed lambie's head and put his mouth to her cheek and made the kissing sound! Ah...be still my heart! :)

Okay, Petra, you are definitely our resident cheerleader. Thanks so much for starting this thread! I just love reading all these brags. :)

First off, wow, that's so cool that you were able to ask him to do an early nap! I wish we had been able to just ask Kaya to go to sleep on our flight last Wednesday (she went 15 hours with just a 2 minute nap when she dozed off as we landed, with 7 hours being on the same plane and almost no walking around allowed because of turbulence)!!!!

But since this is a bragging post, I have a couple:

1) Her language has been exploding in the last month, but this week while on vacation, she's been picking up signs and words so quickly it takes my breath away! It's definitely been fun watching her. Today she was in the children's service and she was standing there with 3 other kids (all older than her) just looking at the pastor speak and occasionally looking at the other kids and then towards the end she looked in my direction, but over my shoulder. Suddenly she started saying, "A-ku, A-ku" and signing Uncle very vigorously. She had noticed my brother in the back and became really excited. Then she ran down the aisle and was going towards him, but saw me and ran into my arms instead. It definitely was an "Awww..." moment as the congregation decided. :)

2) So we started the whole PT a few days before we left on vacation because Kaya decided one day she didn't want to wear a diaper and asked for the potty instead. We've definitely had a few accidents and she's still trying to figure out how to hold the poop until we get her to a potty. However, she's done an excellent job with the pee and other than naps and night time, she'll either be wearing a diaper or underwear and more and more often she'll be dry when we put her on the potty and she'll actually pee. We ask her if she needs to go to the potty every 30 minutes to an hour and she'll say, "no" in a very cute, but emphatic voice and she doesn't go. But if she does, she'll toddle off towards the bathroom and actually go. Well, today, we went to the mall and it was long trip because we got lost. Well, just as we parked and got things out, Kaya started saying, "Potty". Uh-oh. Well, I said, "Okay, we'll find you the potty." We got inside and she immediately became distracted by all the people and things to see and then we met up with a BBB mom (NicciG) and Kaya enjoyed signing and saying, "Baby" over and over. :) Anyway, we were delayed a bit more while we talked "fluff" and then afterwards I told Kaya, "Okay, we'll go find the potty," thinking it was probably waaaaaay late. Well, we did eventually find the potty (maybe 40 minutes later) and I got her in and undid her diaper and wow! it was dry. I put her on and Yay--she went! We got home and about an hour later, her diaper was still dry when we put her to bed. I'm sure it'll be wet in the morning, but wow, progress! I'm so proud that she's learned how to control her bladder. Now we have to do is work on her bowels, but the cool thing is that if she feels the urge, she'll actually say, "Poot" and you can run her to the potty if you're at home. So we have progress there as well.

I'm just so happy that my diaper loads are much smaller and I'm washing them every 2.5 days instead of every 1.5 days. :)

Thanks! I have no musical talent whatsoever -- it is totally his daddy's gene pool. One of my favorite pictures of DS is DS buck naked after a bath, butt to camera, and "helping" his daddy play the guitar, fingers on the strings. It'll be great bribery material come prom night!

The daycare provider asked if we want DS to participate officially in music classes (read: pay for it -- she has a special music teacher come in). She normally doesn't have the under 2 year old set participate because they aren't quite up to it (they sit on the sidelines), but DS has been unofficially participating for months now -- they couldn't stop him. Mostly that means shaking jingle sticks and maracas. She said that DS is more musically with it than kids usually are at his age, and he is capable of doing the class now (and what's more, really wants to do it). I think that is fabulous, and started writing checks immediately. I am cheap on a lot of things, but music classes for my kid? Sign me up.

Great post! I loved reading these. :)

Here's mine-

DS is having a developmental explosion. In the past week, he has rolled over back to tummy (he has been doing the other way for a while), started giving "kisses" to me, sat up on his own for a few seconds, learned to pull himself up from sitting to standing, drank from a sippy cup by himself, and here's the real biggie...

last night he crawled (I'm using that term loosely) across the bed to me! He'd stick his butt up in the air while on his hands and feet, them push himself down and forward over and over, smiling and laughing the whole time. It was seriously the most amazing thing I've ever seen in my life. I was crying my eyes out!

Every day is like Christmas around here lately. I don't know which amazing gift I'll get. :)

Oh, I just love these! The updates from the little kiddos remind me of how exciting it was to reach those milestones with Avery and the updates from the bigger kiddos tell me what I have to look forward to! I have two big brags:
1) DD has always been VERY cautious with her gross motor development, choosing not to do things without our help until long after she's physically able to do them. For the last couple of months she couldn't get from sitting to standing unless DH or I were actually touching her somehow (we weren't doing any of the work for her, but she needed the reassurance that we were there, I think). Yesterday she got the confidence to do it herself, so now nowhere in the house is safe because she gets up and toddles away all on her own!

2) She was looking at some alphabet books with pictures of items in them and when she saw the foot picture she grabbed her foot, the fish picture earned the fish sign and "ish", the watch picture had her holding our her hand to look at her wrist and say "awtch", and the wheel had her saying "wire" (I guess that means wheel, LOL). I'm so impressed!

Not exactly a baby brag, as DS is 4, but we are so excited...

DS was looking at a toy catalog that came in the mail recently. He came across a picture of a leapfrog word whammer that had the letters C-A-T pictured. We were listening to him talk to himself about it, and you could practically see steam coming out his ears, his little mind was working so hard. He looked and said, "I know those letters!" and named them. Then he said "I think I know all the sounds!" and said the letter sounds. Then said them again. And again. And again. Then we heard it - "CAT! Mommy these letters say CAT!" My little man read his first word! Suddenly he is trying to read everything, and we spend lots of time writing small words on his magnadoodle and trying them out. I couldn't be more thrilled!

Petra, the pizza thing is so great! I can't wait to be able to do that. Thanks for starting this thread. I forced myself to read everyone's before adding mine. I'm so proud of all of the little ones on the board as if they were mine. Congrats mamas on all of the milestones reached.

As for mine:
1) DS wakes up about 7 AMish and DH usually goes and gets him and puts him in our bed while I slowly wake up. DS & DH cuddle and watch Sesame Street. Well lately as soon as they walk in the room DS says "mama" really loud. Then DH puts him in the bed and he leans over and goes "MWAH" to give me a kiss. How can you ever wake up in a bad mood after that?

2) DS is definitely exploding language wise. Both with signing and verbal skills. His new favorite sign is book. He walks around everywhere with the board book "Goodnight Moon". He's destroyed it. Anyway, my parents took DS for a couple of hours yesterday and he fell asleep in the car seat on the way home. When they got to our place I went to get him out of the seat and he saw me smiled and signed book. In his delirium he remembered that he had his book before falling asleep. I kept telling him that Bubbe (my mom) had his book, but he just cried and cried until I took him out of the seat and gave him his book back. Then when I sat with him to go to sleep he wouldn't let me open his book to read to him, so I had to read another book while he happily held "Goodnight Moon". I hope this is the precursor to a book worm :)

3) If I ask DS if he's hungry he responds with the sign for eat while screaming "eat, eat".

Thanks for letting me share.

DD managed to shove three puzzle pieces in her onesie. It was good for a laugh if not exactly a milestone. I still don't know which hole they went through. They were in the back, which seems kind of impossible. But not for a genius I guess.

Great idea Petra! Definitely a good time for some baby-fun.

Here are my braggs:
Lawrence hasn't mastered any thing super-recently but I'm just in awe of his ability to learn new things. About 3 months ago he figured out how to do jigsaw puzzles - not the pegs or the wooden ones, actual jigsaws. & he does them by himself. He's like my little puzzle rainman. Oh - & then today he figured out how to take his onesie off all by himself. Oh - the things that impress you as a parent :).

Calvin can already pull himself up to stand & has really mastered crawling the last 2 weeks.

I totally wish my kids would be better at the nap thing, Petra - Lawrence would go down kicking & screaming at 9:30 no matter what I bribed him with.

How about a brag on my cousin's little baby. He got to go home! Born 6 weeks early he came home just last week. Born at 5lbs even, he broke the 6lbs 5ozs before he got to go home.

It's still odd to say he's here. He's not "due" until next weekend!!! :-)

Brag on my nephews, little one learned the sign "sorry" by picking it up from his brother. So cute!

Big one was adorable at the coffee shop, a little boy came up to them and he said "my name is Tristan" and my nephew J (who is a late, late talker) pointed to himself and said "me" then got really excited as he pointed to his brother and introduced him as well; "bubby, bubby, bubby!!" (nephew calls brother bubby obviously and hasn't mastered his own name yet.)

Trust me, it was very cute!

"Just me, and you, and Zoboomafoo-oo-oo..bla bla bla...at Animal Junction just waiting for you!"

"they're going to the closet, they're going on a trip, they're going to the closet, to grab their stuff and split, they're going on a cool adventure and they don't know what's in store, they're coming from the closet and they're headed out the door"

And if you pay attention, occasionaly the Kratt brothers take off their shirts, and they are quite well-put together, if I do say so myself ;)

Me and you and Zaboomafoo-oo-oo. Come along and see what's new. Doing what the animals do!

It won't be long until they're stuck in your head 24/7

DS loves when I sing the Bob the Builder song, too...I wish the boy would get some discernment :P

Wow, there are some great accomplishments going on around here - some of them made me a little teary-eyed. :)

I have two to add! First, Carrie picked up both the sign and the word "apple" a couple of days ago. I was holding her in my mom's kitchen, and out of the blue Carrie said and signed "apple" at the same time and then reached over and grabbed one out of the fruit basket on the counter. That's only the second recognizable word she's spoken. (If you don't count "sh" for shoes and "ts" for socks.)

And this morning we went to a story time at the library. They have an enormous floppy bear there that Carrie loves to pounce on and cuddle with. (In fact, that's the main reason she learned the sign for "bear".) Afterwards, when I was getting her out of her car seat at home, she kept signing "bear". I asked her what she was talking about, and she pointing to her coat, which I was holding. It has one of those sherpa-type linings. She was telling me that her coat was fuzzy like a bear. It's so cool to understand what's going on in her little world!

That's so great!

Charlie said "SH" for shoes, and "OCK" for socks, and is just in the past couple weeks started saying the full words.

You are in for a ride! The language skills are sooooooo much fun to watch. I swear there is at least a new word every day around here these days. Today's word: lemon. "Emon" Said while licking a lemon slice, shuddering, and licking again and again.

Enjoy -- and record the words on tape; they grow out of this stage so quickly.

DS started to walk (from one side of the room to the other)a few weeks ago. During that week he also began to use the sign for milk.

Yesterday I taught him how to throw his cloth blocks into a bin. Today without prompting he started to do it.

He repeats the words we say, but we cannot understand what he is saying yet.

I'll stop at those :-).

Wow! Your pictures are amazing-the first one looks right out of a magazine!
It must be so exciting for you to hear her talking so much. Sounds like she is doing beautifully regardless of no ST.

Great thread!

At 19mths DS has started using 3-4 word sentences...since he only really started using proper words at 15-16mths...this is a huge jump and very exciting!! Yesterday he said "pliz mama more mika (milk)" and when I was putting him to bed "dada work, mama slip, yayan (his name) slip"

I try and say a short prayer with him in bed before I put out the light - he puts his hands together as soon as I start and loves to say "Amen" (usually yells it out loudly half way through :))

Since we are now sorta potty training, he takes his teddy, makes it go potty and then tries very hard to get a diaper on him.

Thanks for letting me share!

LOL! DS repeats, "Mommies Mocha Foffee, please" as soon as walk in to the Starbuck until it is in my hand. At that point, "Mommy has foffee, my mommy happy." Hi, my name is Jessica and I'm addicted to 'foffee.' ;-)

I love these threads.

As for DD, I have everything and nothing to brag about, kwim?

She rolls from tummy to back and back to tummy. She tries to crawl but can't get up on both her knees and hands at the same time so she does this little caterpillar crawl where she sticks her butt way up in the air while keeping her head on the ground and inched forward that way. It's hard to explain but very cute. Occasionally she will manage to move a foot or two forward but usually she ends up just going in a circle.
She loves books and will sit and listen to story after story. She likes to turn the pages. When we go to visit her daddy at work(3 mile walk) I put her in her stroller and give her a book and she will turn the pages and babble to herself.
She is also speaking in "sentences" now. My favorite so far was: "Hey ya ho ya oh yeah YUMMMMMM". She says "ning" for nursing and "ca" for cat. She make slots or sounds including ma, but so far never in reference to me.I think this is my favorite age so far, but then again I've said that every month.

DD has been cruising for quite a while now, but just in the past few days she has stood up without holding on to anything. Yesterday, she even looked as though she were contemplating her first independent steps. Most likely by the end of the month she will be walking.

She finally has teeth! The first just appeared a week ago Sunday. The next on Thursday. Two more look about ready to show any day.

I think she is saying something that sounds like kitty-cat and looking at the cat while she is saying it. She also seems to be saying "Da" while looking at DH. I am not quite convinced she is making the associations yet, but it is awefully close.

These are all such cute stories! Love reading them!

As for us, we just started a new gymbo class a couple of weeks ago. I have been so proud of how Jonah interacts with the other children. He has totally learned manners somewhere (??) and says "excuse me" if he is in someone's way, or "sorry" if he runs into someone, and even waits in line patiently!! I hope it lasts!! ;)

Jen- That is so cute that jonah is so polite. When i speak to dn i try to say please and thank you even if it is about something silly, like please hand me your doggie LOL!.

My shameless brag....

Dn started to walk about 2 weeks ago and he is doing great! We will probably take him on sunday to get shoes. Right now he has robeez but since he now walks more than crawls i think it is time to get "real" shoes. He also knows how to wave hi, blow kisses, he trys to talk, he says "eddie" for teddie, uh-oh when he drops something on the floor, abba(daddy in hebrew), mommy when he is in the mood. He is very funny because if we say like say mommy, he says abba, everything is abba right now. Also for some reason he has associated his father with hats, whenever he sees a hat he says abba and gets happy. Dn is just so sweet whenever i am upset i look at him or think about him and my day is made so much brighter. He is such a sweet boy, i picked him up from daycare yesterday and the little girl there who was playing next to him said "bye avi" and he waved, she was so cute like she was going to miss him.

Ok i think this brag was long enough LOL
