So I've been taking something called Airborne, which is a combo of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Ribflavin, Magnesium, Zinc, Selenium, Manganes, Potassium, and a proprietary Blend of Maltodexrin, Lonicera, Forsythia, Schizonepeta, Ginger, Chinese Vitex, Isatis Root, Echinacea (350 mg), and amino acids (Glutamine and Lysine). It says to consult doctor while pregnant, but didn't say anything about BFing, so I went ahead and took it. But I'm wondering if any one knows anything about this.

Also, as an alternative, my neighbor just sent over some Cold-EEZE, which is basically Zinc Gluconate Clycine drops that you're supposed to suck on to help with cold symptoms. This one does say consult a doctor before taking if you are BFing or Pregnant.

Kaya is obviously no longer an infant, and she consumes more than just breastmilk, but does anyone know the effects of these herbs and supplements on Breastmilk?

TIA! I'm feeling really tired and I'm sick of coughing so much.

ETA: Oh, and I'm also taking Elm Bark cough syrup, which really helps, but I'm wondering if there are any BFing side effects like supply issues or anything like that.

That should be fine when nursing. EVERYTHING says to ask your doctor-- it's your basic CYA. The other thing you can try, though, is elderberry capsules. Elderberry is a strong natural antiviral, and it helps a lot with colds. I give it to Abigail when she has one, too.

Hope you feel much better SOON!

Thanks Rachel! I thought about sending you e-mail, but since this is cold season, I thought that I'd post here.

Okay, off to suck on a Cold-EEZE. :)

One thing to consider is that Airborne has artificial sweeteners in it, so if you are avoiding those while breastfeeding you would not want to take it.

I remember reading once that it was not safe for breastfeeding due to one of the herbs in it. I know it has been discussed here, a search should turn up the posts about it.

Eileen - I can feel a cold coming on, so I just picked some up this morning. It's not the best tasting stuff, but I hope it works!

I'll bow to Rachel on this one, since I'm not nursing anymore and know very little about herbs and breastfeeding. I just wanted you to know you are not alone in feeling like you have been run over by a truck!

I KNEW I tasted sucralose! I didn't even notice that on the label. Yes, I just spent some time doing a search on the herbs and the only one I can figure out as a no-no (but I can't find details) is schizopeneta. Unfortunately, I've already taken quite a few doses :(, but I'm quitting now. I'm hoping that because Kaya is already 21 months, and she's eating a lot and not nursing quite as much, that she's in the clear. Does any know more details about what to look for in side effects for schizopeneta? I just ordered a book from Amazon, the Botanical Safety Handbook, that I'm hoping will give me more details (as well as info on all the other stuff I'm taking) about it, but of course, the book won't be here for several more days.

I'm trying not to freak, since Kaya doesn't seem any different than usual, but it's hard not to do that, since I find out after I've already taken quite a few doses!

Thanks, Ladies.

Oh, and since I have your ear, here's the cough syrup I've been taking and so far it seems like it would be okay:

But maybe I'll stick to robitussin until I know more...

Me too! DS is 9 months old, and I bet I have had at least one cold for each month he has been alive! I used to work in a hospital, but I have never been sick as frequently as I have been since becoming a SAHM. Why is this?! I'm sick all the time. And, I'm sick of being sick. Sick of it! I have a cold right now. Where do all these viruses come from? DS is not in day care. I am not working outside the home. Sorry - I'm just ranting. What can I do to stop this?

ME TOO!! DD goes to childcare twice a week for church/bible study and she seems to pick up a lot there. I started washing her hands as soon as I pick her up but she sucks her thumb so I don't know how much it helps. It makes me feel better though.

I used to get sick every 3 months like clockwork before DD. I spent a long time not being sick and now she gives me almost every one she gets. We're on the third in 4 weeks right now.

Handwashing is the best way to minimize the germ spreading.

True, but the NICU and my ped's office recommend alcohol based hand sanitizers as being superior to hand washing. You need to be much more diligent at hand washing (ie wetting hands, lathering for 1+ minutes, rinsing thoroughly, shutting off water with a towel, and drying hands thoroughly) to kill as many germs as you can simply by using hand sanitizer. You also don't have the same problems that you have with antibacterial soap helping to create resistant germs.

I have small bottles of hand sanitizer attached to the straps of all of my diaper bags, and we use it frequently. We also keep pumps in the kitchen, both bathrooms and DS's room (out of reach, of course). This is the first hint of a cold that I have had since before DS was born, and DS hasn't had any colds yet!
