View Full Version : Is there a CD out there with very simple children songs??

I am eating my words once again and in fact buying a children's music CD. DS has recently started singing, and I am not sure "Sucker Free countdown" on MTV on Saturday mornings will cut it :) I want a very simple CD with words he can hopefully learn to repeat when he sings :) I fully expect to be driven crazy by this, but what can you do?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Hmmm....not sure what you can tolerate, but we have a CD we picked up at Tuesday Morning last year for like 2.99. It has lots of classic nursery rhyme/simple songs on it. The lady singing it drives me nuts but the lyrics are basic and are classic songs. I'll look up the info later but maybe try searching for something like that?

DS's favorites are Raffi and Laurie Berkner, both of which he has started singing in the past few months (just bits and pieces or upcoming words). They don't sound like what you are looking for though ;)

DH and I have been singing Victor Vito to ourselves ever since we downloaded it off of itunes. Sad, huh ?? ;)

I like the Starbucks compilation Gather Round, but I am not sure how simple the songs are.

The music on most no-name kids' CDs drives me bananas, so I won't play them.

Gather round--is that a children's CD? I have liked CDs bought at Starbucks in the past...

My "cool" friends play Raffi, so I borrowed some from the libary and they're not tooooo bad. I really like Baby Beluga. :)

From this board we learned about Wiggleworms from a folk school in Chicago (this is not coming to me off the top of my head). You can only buy it form one independent CD store (I think). We love it and it has a couple songs in diferent languages along with lots of classics.
I will try to get the specifics.

Yep. It's got Sarah McLaughlan singing "The Rainbow Connection" and Willie Nelson singing "Puff the Magic Dragon," etc.

Old Town School of Folk Music. Yes, that's a very good CD too and Eri, as you should know from your classes there, it's mostly very simple traditional children's songs.

Oh yes, we loved Wiggleworms and I did *not* know there was a CD.

I think I'll get that AND the Starbucks one as it just sounds so very cool :)

thanks ladies.

I would first recommend checking out your local library to see which cds they have. I know ours has 100s of them in the kids section.

My favorites are the ones I grew up with, lots of Disney Soundtrack songs and things like that. Muppets, Sesame Street, Annie, all that stuff. I like the familiarity of the music, and the songs are actually good and don't get old quickly like others.

I also like the Disney Children's Favorite Songs which comes in 3 volumes of your basic classic kid songs. (The record got lots of play time back in the day). I think these are my favorite for simple kid songs.

Philedephia Chickens by Sandra Boynton is one of our favorites. :D Even my dh jams to the title song. LOL

We also love all the Veggie Tales cds.

I agree that you should check out library cds first. Raffi drives me NUTS and I learned that after checking out several of his cds.

I still like Peter, Paul and Mommy -- from 1969...

There is more than one Wiggleworms CD and I am sure they are all good. A new one just came out:

Wiggleworms Love You
We're so excited to announce the release of the Wiggleworms Love You, a CD of 42 classic Wiggleworms songs from Old Town School Recordings. The album drops on November 8th and will be available for sale at both Different Strummer locations, the Apple iTunes Store and fine record stores everywhere! Call to order yours (after Nov 8) 773-751-3398.

Also, the Child's Celebration series from Music for Little People is quite good. They have some other very good recordings and other merchandise:

I am a first grade teacher, and we all love CD's by Dr. Jean. She has CD's for learning & fun. She is not a professional singer, but an educator for over 30 years. All the kids in our Kindergarten and First Grade classes love her songs. One that has just simple, common songs is "Nursery Rhymes and Good Ol' Times." Others teach things such as sounds, days of the week, months of the year, etc. Most are set to familiar tunes. Costs are about $17.50. You can find them in parent-teacher stores or visit her website at www.drjean.org

Eri, there's a brand spanking new one, Wiggleworms Loves You, which I bet is fabulous. The other two are Songs for Wiggleworms and The Compact Wiggleworm.

Jim Gill! :)

I love his CDs... they're silly enough for dd, but he throws in upper-level vocab and some lines here and there for the parents, so it kind of keeps my attention, too. :)

Also, Ralph's World Happy Lemons (Ralph Covert) is a pretty good CD. Same vibe as Jim Gill.

We have that one too. Also like it. If you go to Amazon and select a CD like Martha Stewart Sleepytime (don't ask, it's actually good) or For the Kids, check out the lower part of the screen where it tells you other things you might be interested in. There is actually a pretty good number of albums with decent/ good artists singing children's songs.

I would love to get the Starbucks CD. Is it still sold at Starbucks? I can't find it on the Starrbucks website, or on ebay.

We love Wiggleworms, too, and should get the newest CD for DS for Christmas! Laurie Berkner is also popular with DS (and me too).

After a great education in Wiggleworms, Ralph Covert, Justin Roberts, Signing Time, etc., DH has put the cabosh on kids' music from here on out, and I can't say I blame him. We're listening to a lot of Beatles now. Turns out a lot of it is great for kids - Yellow Submarine, Octopus's Garden, Hello Goodbye, and on and on. DD loves it! She really likes Abba, too. Beach Boys would be good "real" music for kids, too. The way I see it, there are decades worth of pop music she has to learn, so why not start now! We throw in a little Cole Porter-esque standards, too.

And I haven't listened to it, but this Jazz for Kids looks really good and I want it for Christmas:

Wqe LOVEW the Jazz for Kids CD! Someone burned us a copy when DS was really young and I always thought it was a mix they had compiled on their own. I should've known better! It really is great!

We've also got Disney Songs the Satchmo Way and I really like it too. I actually bought it in college on a whim, so I've had it for a loooong time.

And there is a Disney compilation with Bonnie Raitt singing, "Baby Mine"-- another great rendition of a Disney tune.

Yes, Beatles are great for little ones - DS spent hours listening to them before we moved and misplaced our CD!

Here's the info on the CD of Disney songs with Bonnie Raitt, http://tinyurl.com/bggz8. This CD is a hoot! Roley likes it and the matches between the songs and the artists are priceless. I guarantee that you have not heard a better version of Heigh Ho than the Tom Waits version on this CD. He makes working in a mine sound about as fun as it probably is.

Eri--

Just wanted to add that we bought that CD when Audrey was 6 months old and STILL listen to it all the time--in fact, just this morning we had it on in her room and were all dancing. :)

I am also a huge fan of Ralph's World (esp. the debut album, and At the Bottom of the Sea).

http://www.ralphsworld.com/

Also a big, big fan of the For the Kids series:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-form/002-7927554-4367257

and Golden Slumbers:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00006785T/qid=1132502648/br=1-3/ref=br_lf_m_3//002-7927554-4367257?v=glance&s=music&n=598394

and Martha Stewart Baby:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00005NQK6/qid=1132502703/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/002-7927554-4367257?v=glance&s=music

We also get a huge kick out of the Mother Goose Rocks albums--they are spoofs on contemporary pop music with nursery rhyme lyrics.

http://www.mothergooserocks.com/

(You know it's sad when I can no longer remember the "real" words to the songs, and instead start singing the MGR lyrics when the songs come on the radio. :))

Sorry for the overkill, but working in a daycare you hear a lot of children's music that makes you want to tear your ears off, and these are selections that I can put on eternal repeat all day and never get sick of them.
