I know this is a real long shot, but I think there are a few BBB members in Europe who might be able to help? My 70-year-old MIL is Italian, living in the states, and she loves gossip/celebrity magazines from Germany (which she gets as a hand-me-down from a friend, with all the word scrambles, etc., already filled in). I thought for Christmas it would be nice to get her a subscription of her own, preferably in Italian though.

I don't know the names of the German magazines that she gets passed to her, nor do I know the names of any possible Italian ones. I've tried searching Amazon's subscriptions and other magazine sites without luck, so figured if I at least had the names of a couple magazines that might make getting one a little easier.

My MIL is not interested in politics, finance, academics, high fashion, etc., so I'm really looking for what my DH calls a "rag." I'm also not looking for a weekly that costs $200+/year.

If anyone can help, thank you SO much.

It's just been too long since I've been in Germany & Europe to remember any of the names...but here are my offerings for similar stuff:

Paris Match is french, but it's the French version of what you want & a lil cheaper: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00006KS1W/ref=pd_cps_gw_2/103-2635073-1133430?v=glance&s=magazines&n=507846

Here's a database of Italian newspapers and magazines: http://libraries.mit.edu/guides/types/flnews/italian.html

A Database of different types of online magazines...I just can't read it to know what how to say "gossip" etc

HTH...looks like it's gonna be pretty difficult to get something in print, though. Lots of resources just on the computer via websites and e-newsletters. You might just do that if you can't find what you want and get Italian-language crossword puzzles.

Thanks so much for all the suggestions. I'll go through them to see if any might work. Unfortunately, she doesn't have a computer so I do need something in print.

Thanks again!

IN the link to the Italian crossword puzzles, I believe you could print those out for her to do. Also, next time you're at your local international airport you could pick up a copy of a foreign language magazine at the news stand. They're pricey, but it might be much more cost effective to buy an $8 magazine every other month than to pay $200 a year for something that's not quite her speed.

Good point. Maybe I'll figure out a different Christmas gift for her then. :)

I think you might be best off just buying individual magazines, too. You might contact this place:

They have retail stores that sell magazines. I am sure they would sell you a selection in either German or Italian. And they would probably know which ones to send. They might even do a subscription - basically mail the mag out each time they get it in for the store. I used to work for them and I know they used to do it for a few customers. It wasn't cheap but I don't think it was $200.

That's a great idea. Thanks! I'll try them.
