I know a few people here use these cameras. Some of the battery packs that came with the cameras are under recall because they can overheat and melt. To see if your battery is affected:

Nikon will replace the battery free of charge. You can go to a UPS store and they will ship it for you, at Nikon's expense. Or you can go to Nikon's website, provide a credit card number (serves as a 30-day hold), and they will ship you the replacement battery and packing materials to ship the recalled one back...that way, you're not without a battery if it's your only one.
