View Full Version : CD Storage ideas?

I'm trying to find a neat/inexpensive way to store CDs. I have some space in a cabinet, so I think something like this that I can slide out one row at a time would be okay, and stacking is not an option. Each row can be category: baby/my college faves/DH's college faves/ etc. However if I want to store 100ish CDs this can get expensive. I'm considering something like this:
http://www.containerstore.com/browse/Product.jhtml?PRODID=74420&CATID=225&searchId=2163267&itemIndex=31

I have also considered getting rid of jewel boxes, and putting CDs in a notebook with sleeves. But then I would miss the liner notes...

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Nupe

I've tried a bunch of ways, and finally gave in and did the notebook and never looked back. I think some notebooks are big enough to fit the liner behind the CD if that makes sense?

It is just a much better system for me personally to have them in a notebook and they take up much less room for me that way.

Not sure how this compares, but we get two rows in these:

http://www.holdeverything.com/online/store/ProductDisplay?partNumber=HE-PROD2457&retainNav=true&parent_category_rn=&cmsrc=SCH&storeId=11001&langId=-1&catalogId=11002&viewSetCode=E&orderId=null&parentId=open+closet

If you put them in with the spine up (so you can read them) they stick up a little bit. They also fit the other way. They have new colors from time to time and sometimes they go on sale.

You might also look into this:

http://www.gaylordmart.com/adblock.asp?abid=396&sid=715673B7AD0A4743BD8C6B60C8D169

It's basically a clear envelope and it should be ok for storage because we have used them at the library where I work. "Part number COS150 has 2 pockets for CDs and literature plus a slot for the spine label" is kind of neat because it has a space for all of the paper that comes with the CD.

Are the liner notes the little booklet, or are they the image on the back of the case? If its the booklet, you can put them in the notebook as well. If the pocket isn't big enough for both, use the pocket next to them. You'll need more pages but it will still take up much less space then the jewel cases do!!!

I ditched the jewel boxes and liner notes a number of years ago and have never regretted it. It had gotten to the point that I wasn't listening to most of my music because I didn't have enough storage space and digging through the boxes was a PITA. Now everything is in one big notebook and I can flip through and find what I want right away. I really don't think you'll miss them.

Katie and Beth:

How many CDs do you have total stored in notebooks? Where do you keep the notebooks? DH has 500-600 CDs and storing them has always been a problem. I think I have finally found a solution that is really cheap and attractive if I can get my butt into gear to do the project, which I will post about separately.

My DH has 500-600 CDs and we want to have doors on any storage item to keep little hands away. I have come up with several storage ideas, in case these help anyone:

http://shop.store.yahoo.com/thestoragestore/mestwirotroa.html
http://www.afo.com/products.htm?cn=177&wid=&wsd=065041108027_5226222
http://www.plowhearth.com/productform.asp
And Costco had something nice, kind of like an apothecary cabinet, a few years ago.

However, I want to spend less than $150, so I think I will have to buy something and build doors. I have found two large-ish CD storage towers in black for only $19 each, each which hold 246 CDs. I am thinking I can have MDF or wood cut to size at Lowe's to be the doors, paint them black, add black wood trim to make two panels on the front of the doors, and then decorate the inner panels with paint, chair caning, bamboo blinds or something else. Then attach the doors with hinges. I can position one tower on each side of the entertainment center and it will look almost like those audio bays that are part of many entertainment centers.

The large-ish CD towers are on sale for $19 each (reg. $34) and available at http://www.afo.com/products.htm?cn=177&gn=2949&wid=&wsd=065041108027_5226222.
You can get half of shipping until Dec. 30 using code 59CM-LTN.

We don't have that many...probably 100-150ish? DH and I chucked a lot before we moved...things we hadn't listened to in years. We figured it was time to part with it all. We download a lot of stuff off of itunes now and that has saved us from buying so many CDs.

I tossed most of the liner/insert thingies but I can see how some people would want to keep theirs. For me, I just didn't need them, but I don't have that many bootleg or special CDs that mattered that much. For the more special/rare stuff I did keep everything.

Our notebooks used to be in the lower cabinets of our entertainment center/armoire, but we aren't using it right now. Currently my CDs are stashed in my oversized ottoman that has storage inside.

I also like keeping my more frequently accessed stuff in smaller albums that hold one CD per page. Ikea has super cheapo ones for like 2-3 bucks at most. They hold enough CDs for some variety but I like being able to grab the whole thing and head out the door, and then bring them back in from the car that way too. It probably wouldn't work for a lot of people but that system is working for us pretty well right now.

Based soley on this thread DH just finished filing away approx 500 CD's into the CD Albums from Staples. We cleared out one barrister cabinet of CDs as well as misc CD's that were floating around! How the cabinets can be used to display models, etc.

Plus, i finally found my "Runaway Bride" CD in some other case - lost long, long ago!

Next up - DVDs. Maybe....

Between my wife and I (well mostly me) we've got probably 1000+ cd's - I keep meaning to set aside some time to just rip them all to mp3 format with WinAmp - then burn them all to several DVD-R's and just pack up all the cd's and plop them into storage somewhere.

We bought and inexpensive media center, ripped all of our CDs and now we play them through the media center that is hooked up to the tv that is hooked up to the stereo. It organizes them for you by artist, album, genre etc. We listen to our music so much more now that it is easiy accessed! We can look at all of our pics on tv too!

All of our CDs are in boxes in the attic now!

Kim - got a link to the media center you got? Or any info on it? Thanks.

Glad to hear I could inspire others!

I'm still looking. I appreciate all the ideas so far.

I think I have decided to get rid of the jewel boxes, and keep the liner notes and CD's--one above the other, that way, I'll know which CD goes back where. The downside is having to buy capacity for 2x number of CDs.

This looks a little more like something I would like on my bookshelf. I just don't know how durable it is.

Actually, it looks like the paper liner notes and CD will fit into one sleeve...

Bill,

Sorry I didn't see your reply until just now.

Here is what we have

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/prodinfoCategory?lc=en&cc=us&dlc=&product=296640&

DH got it on ebay for me last Christmas for around $25. It is wired, but we are able to run it right through our floor so it works out well. We didn't want to get a fancy expensive one until we could decide if we liked it and if we would actually use it. We really love this one and will probably use it until it dies. Or until we absolutely need it to be wireless.

It plays MP3s and photos.

If you need any other information -- pm me! HTH!

Funny, we started looking around recently when we discoverd a box of music cd's in the garage. Dh showed me a leather bound album from one of his favorite catalogs...can't remember if it was Frontgate or HammacherSchlemmer? I bought one from Office Depot's to store my work cd's.
