getting out mothball smell

DH stored some stuff with mothballs and after washing it it still smells. Anyone know of a way to get rid of the smell?

I hate mothballs! But I googled and came up with some of these sites:

These posts seem to imply that even if you get rid of the smell, the mothball chemical residue may still be there.
