View Full Version : What socks with these types of shoes?

This is embarassing. But I like the casual sporty type (don't even know what to call them) shoes that are now the trend, but what socks to wear with them?? Black? none? don't wear? I just don't understand! If it helps, I'm aware that white athletic socks aren't right (even though I've done it quite a few times hoping no one would notice). Are there really no ::I'm super embarassed:: smilies?? :) And, I was fine until it got cold out not wearing any socks with the Merrell mary janes.

These are on sale at Garnet Hill:

I wore these mary janes all summer without socks:

Looks casual and comfortable? But how to wear them??

I wish it were summer already!

I'd wear a thin knit sock with all except the last one (which I'd actually wear a women's white athletic sock with since it's sporty, but if were wearing shorts or capris I'd wear no socks).

With the first two, you could put a cute green or black thin knit (with a hint of stretch) sock....a cute green argyle would be nice. I'd also wear socks of a matching color with the maryjanes. I'm just a sock-preferring type of gal. I like these from www.sockdream.com for the first & second shoes (brown marjanes and green/brown mod shoes).

I'd wear black with the green/black pair and brown with the brown/blue pair. Just those type of basic socks that are neither too dressy nor too casual. With the MJs, I'd wear matching (brown or black or whatever) socks. With the New Balance, I'd wear thin white athletic socks. I'd wear them all with no socks in summer.

Very cute shoes!

I still wears my sneakers without socks (!) but I'd wear just below the ankle black sport socks with them. Like pompom socks. :)

With the first pair I'd wear white athletic socks...the low cut ones you can't really see. Guess I'm in the minority though.

I would probably wear socks with the first 2. The first one you could always wear the super low socks, so it doesn't look like you are wearing socks. I have a pair of mary janes that I love and I always wear fun socks with them when the weather turns cold. By the wear, where did you find those mary janes? They are really cute. I can always use a new pair of shoes (although my husband would disagree). :-)

Thanks everyone. You guys just gave me a GREAT idea to add to my holiday wish list for everyone. Socks that aren't white (although, I could always use more white socks, too! Hee hee.

I think I'm a socks person only when it's cold, but summers (and most of fall and spring) in San Diego are all about flip flops.

I got those MJs on clearence from Nordstrom this summer. I love them. :) I'm really into shoes that I don't have to tie on, since that can be hard with a baby in my arms!

Thanks for your help!!

I bet the white low cut ones would be fine, since you probably can't see them, right?

Hey Caroline-
What shoes was I wearing on Saturday, I wonder? I always wear pumas or slip-ons which are Uggs, but they look like Merrel clogs. Anyway, I love fun socks and usually wear ankle ones. I found great multi-colored ones (and H&M). that way, I can get away with wearing 'em with capris or even skirts in SD.
Otherwise, I wear Tevas or flops, but I haven't done my toes in awhile. :)
I'm so not a fashionista, so take what I suggest with a huge dose of (margarita) salt!

ETA: I would prefer to wear them without socks, but I hate running the risk of getting 'em stinky. Ankle socks are like no socks in look, but I like giving my ankes a little burst of color. BTW: my fave pumas are aqua and my Ugg clogs are pink. :)

I don't blame you! With gorgeous weather like they have in San Diego...I'd be going sockless, too. Also, since it's not so humid and not too hot (kind of like 75 degrees year round, right?)...your feet probably wouldn't get very sweaty or yucky.

Anyways...I live in a beach town, so it's Reefs (flip flops) all the time for me. I wear them from spring to mid-fall (April to early Nov)...so I totally understand the no-socks thing. And I say for convenience sake wear the shoes however you want....unless you're trying to win some fashion awards. ;)

Marisa,
I was wearing my "cold rainy day" shoes which are also my "work out" shoes - just a pair of old New Balance sneakers (with white socks!). :)
I love fun socks, but hate spending money on them, when I know I can get plain, boring, usually doesn't match anything but sneakers and jeans socks for $1/pair (or whatever they are). But I'm so putting this on my Christmas list for the ILs. If it helps me be more cool/hip, I have a few pairs of white ankle socks to wear with the sneakers in the summer with shorts/capris.
But not only am I not a sock type of girl, I don't really like close toed shoes. So I'm really all for the flip flops. I've only just started with other possibilities for shoes becuase of trips to the park (sand!) or the zoo (long walks).
I LOVED your aqua Pumas that you wore on Saturday. I don't think I'm hip enough to pull it off. Hee hee.

There must be something about Reefs staking claim in beach towns, huh? They're my favorite.
And even if I had some great shoes, I'd probably still not win any fashion awards - I might wear the wrong socks to go with them! ;)

Caroline-
If H&M still has their fun ankle socks when I'm in NY next week, I'll be sure to get you some. They are marked with the days of the week and I think it's funny that mine NEVER match up. :) I really think they were 7 pair for 5 bucks, or something. Merry early Christmas! :)

eta: ps, those first shoes look lots like my aqua pumas. We obviously both have wonderful taste. :P

eta: pps, I wouldn't wear socks with the 3rd pair you mentioned. I've seen "toe socks" (I think they're called which just cover the toes and balls of the feet, but I've never tried them.

I have the Merrel MJs (they are my favourite shoes - they are SO comfy). I wear them barefoot in the summer and then switch to funky socks when it gets colder. If I am wearing black pants, I usually wear black socks with a design or if I am wearing khakis, I wear light or white socks with a design. I have worn them with boring black too, and it works as well.

I actually have 2 pairs of the NB because they are soo comfy and i hate laces. I either wear nylons with them because i always wear nylons or i wear these toe socks. The toe socks only cover the front of the foot so nothing sticks out the back of the shoe and looks strange.

Also i love the other two pairs of shoes!!

I've never known anyone else who had those shoes! :) I love them too! Okay okay, socks with designs on them. I'm off to get them already. :) I guess I'm really boring! hee hee.

I really might get these, too, then. I'm glad to hear you like them - I also hate laces! Who has time for those things? LOL. I don't own nylons, so that might be a step too far for me, but I'll look into toe socks. I think I saw them at a store once and I didn't know what you'd need them for. Now I know! :)

Did you hear that they opened a H&M store in SF?? People keep saying there's two, but I only saw the one on Powell St on the webpage. 7 for $5? That might be cheaper than my plain white ones! ;) Thanks!! You're awesome!
