We are going to start working on sleeping out of his Miracle Blanket and in another post a few people suggested giving him a lovie to play with to keep his hands busy. I've found a Munchkin one that is a teether which I don't think looks cuddly enough and one by Dakin that's a stuffed animal and blanket, but it's 24.5' long which seems a bit big for a 5.5 month old. There was one at Target, but it had a rattle in Winnie's head which doesn't seem like the best sleeping idea.

TIA!! Amy

You could try a towel doll. http://tinyurl.com/dg4e6

Or a comfort silkie. http://www.comfortsilkie.com/

You never know what they'll connect with as a lovey. We bought a few different things for DS that did nothing for him. He ended up falling in love with a stuffed animal that I had bought for a shelf in his room, lol. I guess seeing it everyday helped it click with him. One day during a changing he reached for it and he's been sleeping with it, and taking it with him everywhere he goes ever since. :)

My little guy adores his Little Giraffe travel blanky (see link). We have 3 of them, so we can always wash when necessary. We gave this to him at about 6 months, and he got attached so quickly. He now calls it "Whhaa-eee" sounds almost like "why" because he can't say "lovey". It's so cute!

He sleeps with with 1 or 2 of them up by his face, bites on them, rubs his face in them for comfort, and just drags them around Linus-style.

I'm on the search too, for DS2. I think I'm going for a comfort silkie. There is a current post in Baby Beddings about my questions about the comfort silkie (www.comfortsilkie.com) there are also a bunch of other posts about them and other "lovey" makers if you do a search.

DS1 fell in love with his "blankey" from Wal-Mart that is satin on one side. I tried to find one for DS2 in a different color but the only ones I've found are either the same color as DS1's or pink.

I also swaddle DS2 in a 45x45 piece of microfleece from Joann Fabrics so I'll also be sewing on a piece of satin to one side of it and we'll see which one he falls in love with, the homemade or the comfort silkie.

Babes fall in love different types of things, so you may already have a lovey in the making and you don't even know it yet. BUT if you are trying to make him fall in love with a specific lovey make sure it's portable (can be folded or stuffed into a dipe bag) and something that you can buy multiples of, heaven forbid if you lose the item, or just for when you have to wash it.

I agree. I tried some of the blanket critters and the small dolls, but what she fell in love with was her lambie that my sister got her when she was born. Shortly after it looked like she was going to use that as her lovey, my sister found two more lambies (as backup), but smart girl figured it out right away. The two lonely lambies sit in her crib, but it's the original that she always hugs and sleeps on (as a pillow). :D

My oldest ended up with a KidsII Teether doll shaped like a cat.

Similar to these:

but an orange and yellow kitty.

Someone gave it to us as a shower gift and one night when I thought he needed something to cuddle I grabbed it because it seemed to be about the right size, wasn't too soft to be a 'fluffy bedding' concern, but was still pretty cuddly.

He sleeps with it every night. We have so far contained it to the crib as we are terrified of losing it (can't find anymore for sale). One night I substitued a duck when it was being washed and he woke up screaming at 3 am. When I went in he was in one corner of the crib, pointing at the duck in the opposite corner, screaming "Duck, Duck" over and over. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. :-) (He went back to sleep as soon as I removed the duck.)

My older ds has three of these right now, and a few more we had to "retire." He loves them and started became attached as an infant.

My younger ds carries this thing around everywhere:

Good luck!

My DS is madly attached to his taggie blanket. We got the small one and it was worth every penny. He fingers the tags as he falls asleep. It definitely has a calming effect on him! HTH!

My girls all have loveys. I think the key to something becoming a lovey is that it needs to be in their bed every time you put them down to sleep. My oldest has a blankey, my second has a Ling dolly (by Russ, she's Asian) and my last has a bunch of Ty Pluffies: http://www.ty.com/Pluffies_home

I LOVE the Pluffies! They are SO soft and even tho they are all different critters, they all feel the same. Right now we have two cows, two frogs, a dog and a duck. :D

As per some suggestions on this board, I bought DS a taggies blanket from taggies.com. He doesn't carry it around yet, but he does definitely use it when he sleeps. WHile I am rocking him to sleep, he twirls the taggies in his hand. ALso, on the monitor, I will see him reach out and twirl the taggies if he wakes up in his crib.

Sean has a couple of lovies that I rotate him through. Two of them were gifts, and one is a small bear that I bought myself. One is a stuffed dog that's made by Baby Gund:

The other was this idea, though Sean's isn't personalized (and I'm sure you can find others that are much cheaper):

The one I bought was a small bear from Boyd's Bears:

Something to remember about buying stuffed animals for babies is to look for eyes that are sewn on rather than plastic eyes that are glued on. Plastic eyes can become a choking hazard if your baby bites off an eye while teething. Also, you probably want to get something smallish that won't smother your baby while he's sleeping.

You can pick anything you like, but it's most likely that your child will pick what they want to, when they want to. My DS didn't pick until he was probably 18-20 mths old. And he didn't pick any of the toys, blankets I offered him prior to that. You may not have any choice.
