Hi,
We are moving to Dallas next week and I was hoping anyone who knows the city can offer some info. We will be living in north Dallas and I was hoping for some tips (esp. bargain hunting ones!) on the area such as:
1) Grocery Stores. We will be living near a Tom Thumb and Whole Foods but I'm a coupon shopper so tell me if there are better supermarkets to maximize my savings.
2) Appliance stores. In San Diego there is a Sears outlet, is there such a thing in Dallas?
3) Nice parks and any areas a 14 month old would enjoy exploring.

Thanks for any help,
Daniella

No help here, as I had never been further west than Cleveland until I moved to Chicago! However, just wanted to let you know that I think Zehava is a beautiful name!
Good luck on your move.

We lived in Coppell but before having a baby so I don't know anything about parks for children. But, I did shop at Tom Thumb and I think Krogers is less expensive. We lived walking distance to Tom Thumb but I tried to only shop there when absolutely necessary and hit Krogers most of the time. I shop at Whole Foods here in Maryland sometimes and it is the most expensive grocery store around but worth it for some of its products!

Hi Daniella. Welcome to the Big D! :D

>1) Grocery Stores. We will be living near a Tom Thumb and
>Whole Foods but I'm a coupon shopper so tell me if there are

I shop at Kroger (Ralphs in CA?) since it's closer plus it always seems pricier at Tom Thumb whenever I go over there.

>2) Appliance stores. In San Diego there is a Sears outlet, is
>there such a thing in Dallas?

They have a Sears outlet at the GrapevineMills.com mall.

>3) Nice parks and any areas a 14 month old would enjoy
>exploring.

Depends where in North Dallas you're moving to.
The Dallas Arboretum is nice.

I lived in North Dallas for a few years before DD. Tom Thumb can be a little more expensive than Kroger or Albertson's, but I generally like the produce and general store quality at Tom Thumb better. I think that it's a total personal preference kind of thing, though! Whole Foods can be pricey, but I shop there for specific things.

I believe that there's a Sears outlet at Grapevine Mills mill in Grapevine (near DFW airport). You can also check out Great Indoors as well as Lowe's and Home Depot. We purchased our refrigerator from Great Indoors b/c they had the best price. We actually just got a coupon from them for 10% off appliances, but it expires in a few days. All that to say that Great Indoors does offer %off coupons every once in a while. I think that they're owned by Sears, but I might be wrong. Great Indoors is located on Alpha near the Galleria (635 & the Tollway).

I'm not sure about parks, but the Galleria has a pretty nice indoor children's play area as does The Shops at Willow Bend (Tollway & Park). I'm sure other DFW moms will chime in, but I'll try to think of other things to add! (Feel free to PM me if I can help you with any add'l info!)

I live in far North Dallas, and here is my 2 cents...

Grocery stores: I live right by a Tom Thumb, but I honestly do most of my shopping at the SuperTarget on the NE corner of Park and the Tollway. They will also be opening a Walmart at that intersection in the coming months (I have never grocery shopped there, but a friend of mine swears by their prices.) Costco on the other side of the tollway is also a favorite for fruit and other items that we go through quickly. Whole Foods is great, but there is also a Central Market at 190 & Coit that is fabulous. Great produce, interesting items and fabulous pre-made dinners... consider picking up "Dinner for Two" near the checkout area while you are getting settled. I think their prices are a little better than Whole Foods and they still carry organic.

Appliance stores: There is a Sears outlet in Carrollton - 1215 Marsh Lane. That is closer to N. Dallas than Grapevine Mills.

Parks: I haven't really tried any outdoor parks yet because the equipment always looks too big for my DS (Connor is 15 months). We have tried out the mall play areas, and Willow Bend (NW corner of Park and the Tollway) is GREAT for a 14-month-old. The equipment is small enough that you can see your child throughout the entire play area, but large enough to present a challenge in climibing at that age. The Galleria (Dallas) and Stonebriar (Frisco) also have nice play areas, but it is hard to see your child from all areas of the play area... maybe I am just a paranoid mom, but they make me a little nervous.

It sounds like you will be moving very close to me (I'm assuming Plano form your post), so please don't hesitate to email me if you have any questions about the area! It's "Breeder Central" in this part of Dallas, so I know you will enjoy moving here with a little one.

You have already been given some great advice! Welcome to the area!

If you are ever in the Allen area (suburb of N. Dallas) check out Celebration Park...it is awesome!

Thanks! DH and I spent a lot of time deciding between Rachel Zahava and Zahava Rachel. Rachel won as the 1st name but we actually call her Zahavi most of the time.

Just wanted to thank all of you for all the info! I didn't realize North Dallas can be so many areas. Perhaps there is a better name for the area but I don't know it yet - I haven't even been to Dallas yet. We'll be around Preston and Forest.
By the way are there any stores similar to Trader Joe's in Dallas?
I'm trying to get myself excited about Dallas but it's so hard to leave such a pretty place like San Diego.
Thanks again everyone,
Daniella

You will be a little further south than I thought... The Galleria will still be a good play spot for that location. I know there have been a lot of rennovations to Northpark mall, so there might be a good play area there when all of the construction is complete. Carrollton is still closer to you as well for the appliances.

I am sad to say there is not a Trader Joe's here. I would love it if we got one! I would still check out the Central Market, although the one at Central and Lover's Lane will probably be closer to you.

San Diego is beautiful... we were married in Southern California, and there is no where like it! That being said, Dallas is great for young families. We may not have the scenery, but the people are incredibly friendly!
