I'm working on a marketing project for a local org. & need to bring in a few examples of fantastic logos. (Corporate, small business, retail, you name it.)

Does anyone have a favorite to share?

TIA...

I like my church's logo. http://www.church-redeemer.org/a/php/home/index.php It's either a cross or a "C" and an "R" for Church of the Redeemer. I always looked at it as the cross, DH saw the C and R. Not until he commented on the letters did I notice them.

I like logos that incorporate more than one thing and you have to look for both.

Along the same lines, I never noticed the arrow in the Fed Ex logo until I saw it on t.v. I guess that's one of my favorites.

I like FedEx (the little arrow inside is clever).

I like the Applebees logo (with the apple & text), as it makes me happy...and yet it's food, so hungry 2.

I like the Nautica boat logo-makes me feel "rich" like I can go sailing.

"Crest" logo is so wonderfully bright and yet "clean" looking
http://www.windsorpeak.com/dc/user_files/31042.jpg

The Target bullseye is so universally known...it's just the "spot" to get what you need
http://www.windsorpeak.com/dc/user_files/31040.jpg

ETA: I love the "Intel" inside logo on computers w/ the Intel Pentium 4 processor chip.

The Clinique "C" says clean, contemporary, cute make up.

The Wells Fargo horses and carriage are pretty cool, too.

Is this what you mean?

My favorite is the United Colors of Benetton logo. It's very plain, so not sure why I love it so?? Perhaps because I always I associate it with their edgy adds. And, I love their clothes.

Edited to remove link as unnecesary.

Ok, I'm dumb. I *still* cannot see the arrow. I am just visually impared, I guess :)

Edit: ok, I see it now. I had to look away and look at it again. LOL.

I loved the HomeGrocer Logo. Seriously when they closed I was sad to lose not only my grocery delivery but also the little Home Grocer vans with the cheery peach that were everywhere in Seattle for a glorious, glorious year!

I never noticed the arrow, LOL!

I like LG because it incorporates the letters and makes them into a smiling face. I also like Staples because the "L" is a staple. I also like Target - very recognizable and it implies that you will find what you are looking for there.

Great question!

This is a great start - thank you all for posting so quickly!

The logo work is for our local symphony. The current logo is just SO out of date (think 1970!) and doesn't reflect the quality of the organization. Also, we've recently added a youth orchestra and an orchestra in a neighboring community, so the logo needs to be adaptable to more than one organization, but be uniting of the groups at the same time.

My early-on thought is to come up with a graphic that's identical for the 3 groups, and have the group named within the logo. (does that make sense?!)

Any other ideas or favorite?

That makes great sense. The University I work for had a problem with way too many logos for various schools and programs. There are still some outliers who use their "own" logo (i.e, Athletics), but most departments now use the same logo with different text. IMO, it was a really good thing to do. Here's our logo site:

What about a logo based on a violin? The first violin leads the orchestra, I think.

Sounds like a fun project - something like you would see on the Apprentice!

as soon as I read the 3 parts incorporated into one, I pictured a triangle format. Like the letters (ie CSO) in a triangular shape and the 3 organizations name forming the segments to form it. If there are 2 letters, the middle tall letter can be an instrument or musical note.

I like the Naval Academy logo, the yellow block 'N' with the little star above to the right, like on this hat:

http://www.navygear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=62_128&products_id=269

Also, the Apple logo. So simple, but so recognizable.

OOOOOOOOOOOOooooh. My step brother is actually in charge of PR and the new advertising team for the Virginia Opera. Through his background in graphic design, his team actually turned around sagging attendance records through use of "Japanamation" type ads, although I'm not sure if they updated their logo or anything. IMO, the challenge of reaching a younger demographic is the hardest thing when it comes to performances such as opera and symphonies. Appealing to younger audiences can be as easy as making the type face more "fresh and modern." If you have any questions about particulars, I can surely contact him.

Check out their new website: http://www.vaopera.org/
Very edgy if you ask me. The old (regulars) will always come, but I think he knew that they needed to appeal to a new audience to keep attendance from dropping out (dying).

I'm not looking at it now, but it's the white space between two letters. I think it's between the E and the X.

Tara,

It's one of those optical illusion/optical tricks. If you look at the space between the bottom two rungs of the E and the X, it forms an arrow facing to the right. I never noticed it before either.

Katie,

That's funny because I have a HomeGrocer magnet that
is in the shape of their van with the little peach
on the side. I was going to toss it when they went
out of business but I always liked the way it looked
so it stayed!! :)

It's so weird how certain logos can make you stare at them and like them,, even when you have no reason to need the company itself.

Here's one of mine....
Apria Healthcare....love the star/person logo...
http://www.apria.com/home/

Also love the apple (mac) logo, the NBC peacock logo.

There's also a office supply/delivery company that has a green logo on their truck, whose name escapes me at the moment, but I like their logo too.

Larissa - they have an awesome site (I'm sure it helps that their organization has an awesome budget to start with!!!) Thanks for the link.

Our site underwent a temporary overhaul this season - sort of a bridge between the outgoing logo /look & the to-be-created logo / look. It's nothing spectacular, but much better than what we started with 8 months ago!

The younger demographic is a tough one to get - in our reasearch we've found the phrase "Culturally Aware Non-Attenders." That's the audience we're trying to lure to the concerts... People with entertainment dollars in their pocket, who enjoy traditional classical music & the "new" composers as well, but who just don't think about going out and buying tickets. It's a tough audience to market to.

If you ever want to talk more about it, email me, but I totally understand what you're talking about. I don't think I'd even go to performance arts if I hadn't grown up in musical theater. My mother was an accomplished opera singer w/ the Boston Opera Company as well for many years before my birth, so we were never far from either being in or attending operas, symphonies, musicals and stage plays in my own youth. Now we get free/cheap tickets to the Opera and my mom is a chair of a local music club, so we subscribe to a local concert series (we've seen everything from Boston Brass to The American Tenors to the Dualing Pianos). And it's nothin' but old people in the audience...I think we were the only people in there under 60 years old!!

The real effort comes in cultivating an appreciate for music through teaching the arts in public schools (chorus, band, orchestra) and letting our young children know how fascinating it is to attend live musical performances...and marketing goes a long way.

Oh, but I digress. I wish you the best of luck finding a logo and website design that attracts more people. Hopefully they'll think of something professional and classic enough to retain the old & faithful population but also be fresh and hip enough to attract a new audience....and keep you all in business.

As to the funding...yes, we're fortunate to have deep pockets in the philanthropic circles here. THere's lots of old money in the south...and in all the Fortune 500 companies here. But I know they work hard at it w/ fundraisers and special events (backstage meet-n-greets for subscribers). Anyways, wishing you lots of luck.

Another fan of the Fed Ex logo. Very clever. It was one of the more talked about logos in design school.

Some of my other favorites are Apple, Nike, Volkswagon, Pentagram and Starbucks. Some of the other logos associated with famous brands that I like are Coca Cola, Citibank, BMW, Mercedes Benz, Starbucks, Pentagram United Airlines, Microsoft, Target, Harley Davidson, McDonalds,

And for a relatively new company Google- Loved the way their logo has evolved since inception. LOVE the way they incorporate holiday themes with their logo keeping its integrity.
