I'm kicking myself (along with a few tears) over what I let happen to poor Julia tonight. I was supposed to be going out with two friends for a nice birthday dinner, but DH and the kids and I were running out to the store real quick beforehand.

On the way out, I sat Julia on the dryer so I could put on her jacket. (Pretty stupid) The laundry room is right next to the door leading into the garage, and we also keep all the jackets and shoes in there too. I reached over to grab mine for a split second (more stupid), taking my hand off of her for a split second (stupid, stupid, stupid). As I turned around I saw my precious little Julia fall to the floor like a little rag doll HEAD FIRST. It happened so fast, that I'm not even sure if I broke her fall or not. I did get my hands on her as she hit the ground, but am not sure if it was in time. She was hysterical for a few minutes, and still pretty fussy, so after calling the after hours ped line, we decided to bring her to the ER to be checked out. Luckily everything was fine. Head CT was normal and they did a right shoulder x-ray since she also sort of fell on it, and it too was negative.

Yes, I know not to put kids on high surfaces, but I didn't intend to let go of her. When I went to grab my jacket, it was moved a hook or two out of my reach, and I then spaced out and let go to grab it and that's when it happened. Ugh...

I'll still be keeping my eye on her since occasionally head trauma does not manifest itself right away. But I'm thankful things look okay for now.

And I missed my birthday dinner with my two friends who drove 30 minutes to my side of town.

All it takes is the blink of an eye....stupid, stupid me tonight. :(

(Perhaps this should have gone in the bitching post.)

It's so easy to space out for just a second especially when you have a little one. ((((hugs)))) to you and Julia. I'm glad that everything checked out okay in the ER!

I'm sure most of us have at least one moment like this. I know I've had mine. I'm thankful that everything looks to be okay.

Oh Marcy, I'm sorry that this happened, but it sounds like Julia is fine. (((Hugs))) Kaylin fell this afternoon, too - she's always so good walking up stairs, but today she stopped to turn back down after 3 steps and hit her head on the gate on the bottom of the stairs. :( But it happens to all of us. I'm so glad that Julia is okay!!

"ma meee" "mama" and, occasionally, when she's ... confused :"dada" to Kaylin 6/5/04

Hugs to you & Julia. I am sure we all have had those moments.
My DS fell off the bed at the age of 7 months as I turned around to unpack (we were at a hotel out of town for a wedding). Ugh... See, you can't claim the award so easily :-)

Take care,

Hey, we all do dumb things. I'm glad she's fine!

Don't be too hard on yourself! The important thing is that Julia is okay! We've all had our moments and in fact, Kaya rolled off the changing table at 5 months (with my hand partially on her) and she went headfirst off her bed at 8 months and rolled off our bed at around 11 months. Surprisingly, she still seems to have all her faculties. ;)

Big hugs to you and Julia!

If that is what earns you dumbest mommy of the year then I should be waiting to receive my super, colossal, truly idiotic mommy of the year certifictae in the mail anytime now. Go easy on yourself mama! These things happen to the best of us. Sometimer I joke that my DS survives in spite of me not because of me! :)

I'm so sorry, I know how frightening it is. I think we all have those moments, I know I have! It doesn't make you stupid or dumb, you're human and accidents happen!

Last night DD started screaming over the monitor so DH went running down to see what was wrong and he quickly opened her door where DD happen to be standing. Poor thing, she was having a nightmare and got slammed in the head by the door (she has a nice blue bruise down her forehead today). These things just happen. There is no such thing as a perfect parent :-)

I'm sorry you missed your birthday dinner and had to spend your special day in the ER and worrying about a head injury. I hope you're able to celebrate another day! Chin up mama, you're a wonderful parent!

The good news: luckily so far so good, no ill effects observed from her head hitting the ground.

The bad news: we noticed this morning she was holding her leg in a turned out position, guarding it, and screaming when we changed her diaper. We called our ped and he told us to come on in. He sent her for x-rays and turns out she has a hairline fracture of the right distal femur. (the thigh bone)

So we then had to take her to an pediatric orthopedic specialist. Luckily the growth plate was not involved but she does have a full leg cast for 2 weeks to immobilize the fracture site.

I feel like a shmuck, but honestly I feel better today. I know it happens to other people, but never thought it would be me!! :)

And I realize a broken bone is waaay better than an injured brain!

Thanks for everyone's support. I really do appreciate it.

Hugs to all of you. What a stressful time for you!

We all have oopsies from time to time--but they're certainly never fun. Of course, when little Julia is 32, you'll all look back and laugh. Just be glad its not summertime with a broken femur!!

Hugs,

Oh, poor baby! :( But you're right--it's much better than an injured brain and it was totally an accident! One thing is that after every fall that Kaya had, we did have her see her chiropractor and sometimes he had to make an adjustment and sometimes it was just fine. You may want to have her checked out just to make sure all is right with her spine.

Big hugs, Marcy! Don't beat yourself up over it. I'm glad you do feel better about it. :)

Oh, Marcy. Lots of hugs!

I should scan in my 6 month baby pictures for you. Full leg cast (rolled off the bed and caught my leg between the frame and the mattress). I'm living proof that you can heal normally and go on to run track, snow ski and all that other jazz after *6* weeks in a leg cast as an infant!

Be sure to take lots of pictures-- I like that I have them now (and the signed cast with signatures of long-passed relatives).

(((hugs)))

Awww, what a bummer, but I'm glad you're able to see the silver lining in all of this. If it's any consolation, I was setting up the PNP in my friend's bedroom, set DS on her bed because there was no room on the floor, and he fell off right in front of me. I wasn't quick enough to catch him and he landed right on his face. Poor baby had a bruise on his forehead and rug burn on his nose for days. I felt like such a bad mama.

Anyway, just wanted to say that I've done stupid things, too. We're all human and fallible. Hugs to you and your DD.

I had a similar incident last week that involved DS falling face first out of my car onto the driveway. You can only imagine. Not my finest moment in parenting. Luckily, he's fine, but we were on head trauma watch as well. Sorry to hear about your little one's leg, but you are totally right, its far, far better than a brain injury. 2 weeks will go by like that. They are resilient little critters aren't they?
((((hugs))))

Poor kid! Poor mama too, we all goof sometimes, I dropped my kid once (well he wiggled out of my lap but that's still dropping him!). He turned out ok (mostly LOL). It's odd she broke her leg, not her shoulder or arm but glad her head is fine, that is the most important part!!

Thank God she's ok.

It was an accident I'm sure your friends understood, maybe they'll drive the 30 minutes another day to celebrate a belated b-day !

Oh Marcy, big hugs to you. So glad that in the scheme of things her injury wasn't more serious. Don't be too hard on yourself. I'm lucky my kids haven't ended up with a fracture for all the tumbles they've taken.
