I am looking for some recommendations for parenting books. I get so overwhelmed when I go to the book store. Also, I do not often get to go by myself so I was hoping to order something on-line, which makes it impossible to leaf through anything. So I was hoping to get some recommendations for books that have worked for you!

I do not want to get anything that favors one parenting philosphy over another. I have found that with my own two dc, I have had to use different methods/theories. For example, I let my dd CIO, it was the only way she could fall asleep. But, I wouldn't dream of letting my ds CIO, it just wouldn't work for him. So I am not looking for a one size fits all kind of book, IYKWIM.

I would appreciate any suggestions. TIA!!

Becoming The Parent You Want To Be

I like this one a lot, but it does have a point of view. I happen to think it's
one that's nice to child and parent both, and it certainly isn't one size fits
all.

I second Becoming the Parent You Want to Be!

If I'd read that one first, I'd have: a) not bought all of the others and b) been a better and mroe relaxed parent all this time!

This isn't so much a parenting book, but it is a great reference book to use up to the teen years and it still covers some basic developmental stuff. What I like about it is I can go to it to answer basic questions without getting overwhelmed.

The Children's Hospital Guide to Your Child's Health.

I think its hard to recommend books that don't have a particular philosophy. I like positive parenting and gentle discipline stuff, so books I've liked are:

Playful Parenting by Cohen http://tinyurl.com/cazj8

Parent Effectiveness Training http://tinyurl.com/arant
(my son is too young for any of the ideas in here, but its great for later, and for day to day adult relationships, as well)

I also read the Gentle Discipline board at www.gentlechristianmothers.com a lot for inspiration. Its not overtly preachy, you don't have to be Christian to read there, and the ladies are so wise!

If you are looking for time-out and other punishment type stuff, I don't know any of those books.

Thank you everyone for your responses. I definitely should have searched the archives before I posted this question because this issue has been discussed at length. I thought I would post links to some threads that I found that were particularly helpful. I think I am going to start with Playful Parenting and Positive Discipline. Thanks again!
