My friend's son will be 7 this week; he is really into drawing, and is probably getting an easel from his parents. We'd like to get him some art supplies, but he's already got lots of crayons and markers. My friend said he's getting into tracing and pencil drawing; she suggested a tracing lightbox device of some sort. He also likes clay and playdoh.

The lightbox sounds like a good idea, but I don't know where to look for one, or how much they might cost. Do they make kid-friendly ones? (We used one in my lab, but it was really big and heavy). And other than pencil sets and tracing paper, can anyone suggest some fun art supplies?

TIA!

One suggestion for another art-related gift would be a drawing book. I have seen some really nice books for children that break down drawing animals into easy steps. I actually bought one at a book fair held at work. It was quite large and had a spiral backing. It was supposed to be a gift for someone else, but DH wants it for himself :)

This one seems to be more kid friendly than the ones you are used to in lab and is designed specifically for tracing.

This coloring book is wonderful! Plus, there are more
editions in this series.

It is called The Anti-Coloring Book by Susan Striker.
Not your typical coloring book of just coloring in the
pages.

One page may show a black outline of a planet in outerspace
and you are supposed to draw a picture of what you think
a Martian looks like.

One page may ask you to design a flag for your family.

I absolutely loved this book when I was in elementary school.
It is so fun and creative!! :)

I always had some of these books in my classrooms when I was teaching. They were well loved by kids from pre-k through 6th grade!

I would get him a nice set of pencils and some good drawing pads, you never have too much paper when you are that age. Also, i would look into colored pencils, Prismacolors are really nice. Or you could get him a nice art box with a gift card and let him and his parents pick out something?
