View Full Version : Hitting self in the head?

I think I've seen a post about this before, but...

It's perfectly normal for a baby to hit himself in the head while eating, right?

DS normally only does this when he's tired--mostly at the bedtime bottle. But tonight he was hitting himself pretty hard! I tried to grab his hand to get him to hold on to mine (usually he's holding on to my fingers until I lose circulation, although he's starting to hold onto his bottle), but he kept letting go to hit his forehead. Yesterday he kept rubbing his eye while eating to the point it was getting red.

Should I be more worried? I am worried that he'll hurt himself and not realize he's even doing it. He also startles very easily and I'm afraid he's going to startle himself one of these time!

Yep, perfectly normal. The first few times it seems very bizarre, but before you know it he'll get past this stage.

So DD is not the only one? She does all of that!!! And bangs on the bottle until it falls out of my hand, and then gets mad at me (because it's obviously my fault). :P

It'd BETTER be, or we're in trouble here at our house :D

Seriously, DS hits his head, me, the bed (POUNDS on it, in fact, like a little Nikita Khrushchev at the UN), or anything within striking distance.

He also grabs his foot while he's eating, points his toes, and flexes and extends his legs like Jane Fonda on the cover of her old aerobics video.

OT, but in yoga, we call this pose "Happy Baby." :)

My DS went through a stage of doing this same type of behavior when he was 5-6 months old. I even posted about it and was assured that a lot of babies do this. His hitting only was when he was drinking his bottle, mainly nighttime bottle. He no longer does it anymore. He is occasionally an eye rubber, too. THis behavior I definitely try to stop b/c I am afraid he will scratch his cornea.

Wow, he knows yoga already! I can finally join in a bragging post :) Anyhow, must be normal if they named a pose after it.
Thanks, Marisa!

Thanks for the reassurance! And the knowledge that my baby isn't the only one. Like I said, I was pretty sure I had seen a post about it before, so sorry if I was repeating things. But I find I don't always pay attention to "milestones" when DS hasn't gotten there yet and I forget!
