View Full Version : Bump on the head vs. broken bone, how do you know?

How do you know when a bad blow to the head is more than a bump?

Gabe and I had a head-on collision with each other this morning while playing. His forehead smacked me right between my eyebrows. We were both going full speed towards a pillow and he swerved last minute and knoncked my noggin.

He seems fine, but I'm in crazy pain! My forehead has swollen up to twice it's size and it's red (soon to be blue I'm sure). The pain is intense, more like a pressure/burning numbness feel, and don't even think of touching it or I'll get you!

Anyhow, I'm debating whether or not I should get my head checked. I know sometimes our kids hit so hard, but they're always fine. Any thoughts?

I feel so dumb!

If your head is that swollen and sore to touch I would definitely get it checked out. With head injurys you dont want to take any chances. I know our kids have hard hard heads but a shot right between the eyes like that doesnt sounds so good. Better safe then sorry. As for feeling dumb...we all have those moments. :)

I would get it checked out as soon as possible. It may be nothing, but you would not want to take the chance just in the rare event of it being something.

Hope you are feeling better soon!

I agree with PP, definitely get it checked right away. At the very least you want to make sure you don't have a concussion, which is easier to happen than you would think! Especially if it's hurting that much, I would get it checked right away! (i.e., you don't want to sleep with a concussion)

I hope you feel better soon, Mariana!

Thanks for the replies!

Yup, hairline fracture. There's no swelling or bleeding and no concussion, so nothing too serious. Just lots of rest and painkillers! I go back in a few weeks to get it checked again.

It's official. My child is more thick-headed than I am. :)

Yikes! I'm glad it isn't too serious and I hope that the pain is going away.

Eep! Okay, make sure you get that needed rest, even though I know that's asking for miracles with two kiddos! I hope you feel better soon!
