Hello -

I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this and has advice -
DS (9 mo old) has been on iron supplements since birth. He got his first 2 teeth a month ago and they have black/brown discoloration. From what I'm reading, it is most likely from the iron supplement - about 1% of kids will get the staining from the iron.

Anyone else ever experience this? How do I remove the staining? I already brush 2x/day with baby toothpaste. I want them to be pearly whites! :) Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

TIA!

Yes, it sounds like the iron drops but you may want to mention it to your ped. at the next well-baby. We did the baby brushing as well but it only slightly worked. Our DS was on them for about 3 months and slowly they have gone back to a nice white color since he has stopped getting them :) Also, we gave them to him 1st thing in the morning so he would have something to eat afterwards which I felt helped as well.

My DS started the iron supplement at 2 years old, and his teeth were getting black as well. Now I mix in the supplement (Fer In Sol) with a little bit of orange juice (while before I just gave it to him from the dropper).

I was told that brushing it with baking soda helps, but I have not tried it yet. Reducing the dosage (from 3X a day to 1X) seems to have returned a little of the whiteness. The reduction was doctor initiated though.

HTH and let us know.

THanks for your replies. :)
I'm already mixing it in his food - he's not getting it straight from the dropper. I thought that would avoid this, but apparently not.
We have our 9 mo apt with the pediatrician tomorrow so hopefully we'll be able to cut back on the iron. Hopefully she knows some miracle cure for getting the stains out! :(

DS was on iron drops for a few months last year. His teeth were discolored but it went away once we stopped the drops. Not much help if this is a long term thing but it will go away!

Yay!
At our 9 mo visit, we got the ok to stop the iron. Hopefully this will start to go away. The good thing is he doesn't yet have his upper teeth, so those won't be affected. That would be terrible! I'm so glad we are done with it! :)
