With heating oil prices skyrocketing this year, we've started turning the thermostat down at night an extra couple degrees, but I'd like to turn it down even more, except I'm worried about Kaya's room getting too cold. I heard on the radio the other day about a portable heater (I think they look like radiators) that you plug in, that don't use a whole lot of power, that are not fire hazards, and won't burn you if you accidentally (or purposely) touch them. I can't remember the name of them, though. If it works out well, I'd like to turn our heat down to 60 at night and just use it in Kaya's room all night (and maybe another in our den at night after Kaya's already gone to bed).

Does anyone know what I'm talking about (lol)?

I'd love it if you have any recommendations for brands and good places/prices to get them!

Thanks a lot!

I just bought a Vornado (the $99 one) in Bed Bath based on a recent post here. We love it and i'm going to pick up another one for the master bedroom.

It's not this one is it?

Also, do you know what the power consumption on these things are? I just want to make sure I'm not paying as much for electricity as I would if I just heated the house with the heating oil, if you know what I mean. Granted, during the summer I'll leave a fan on all day or I'll sometimes leave a fan on to help dry a wool cover, etc., but I just want to make sure this is something that is not an electrical hog. :)

I've been looking for a safe little portable heater, too! Hadn't looked at this one...I found this info at www.vornado.com

Q: How much energy does a Vornado VortexHeat Heater consume?

A: At their highest settings, our heaters use a maximum 1500 watts of electricity, drawing 13 amps. On the “Low setting, the VH2 maximum is 770 watts, drawing 6.7 amps; the DVTH maximum is 1500 watts, drawing 13 amps. Assuming an average cost of .10/kilowatt hour of electricity, VortexHeat or any other 1500-watt electric heater will cost around .15/hour of operation.

Eileen,

Thanks for posting this! I've been wanting to ask about the same thing myself. We keep the thermostat at 70 and it's still really cold in Jacob's room at night. But I've never heard anything good about space heaters so I was thinking about maybe posting here for ideas. :)

Thanks! DH just ordered one directly from the Vornado website ($99). We'll try it out and see how it works. He couldn't find that same model on any of the other websites, but if it works well, I'll go to BB&B and see if I can find it IRL with a 20% off coupon for another one.

I just got the online notice of our power bill but not the actual so I haven't compared it yet to last month.

Thanks! I'm amazed at how small the thing is! I like that I can dial in a specific temperature and it will maintain that temperature, rather than just low, medium, and high. :)

This is the one that DH ordered, also for $99:
