Help me please! I've been invited to a cocktail party/shower for a just engaged couple. They have NOT registered. My invitation suggests I get something for their computer room (different people have been "assigned" different rooms).

The only thing I know about their computers is that the guy likes computer games and is the sort to have really good electronics. I think they must have PCs since he likes games. I will not have a chance to find out any more about their system. . . .

What on earth can I get them? I'm looking to spend $45 or less.

Thanks!

Somebody else posted about this once:

Otherwise, what about a desk lamp, or something to store CD-ROMs? Or paper?

I think you can do a TON of stuff with that- organizer things, one of those massager things for the back of the chair (BBB has them- you could use a 20% of coupon), some sort of decorative thing- picture frame, candles, etc, paper shredder, one of those bulletin board/magnet board/chalkboard type things that Pottery Barn (or Target) sells or even a really nice address book.

www.thinkgeek.com has a TON of really cool and nifty computer geek type stuff. :)

If they're into computers at all, you're taking a risk by buying anything. Chances are they'll want to research purchases themselves.

I'd get them a Thinkgeek.com gift certificate, or one to Fry's (or similar - but not a generic place like Best Buy, which doesn't have high-end electronics).

I like the ideas PPs have posted about things not directly related to the computer itself - like the bulletin board, chair support pillow, etc. Frames would be a great idea (maybe a set of them that all match?).

Do they have a laptop? Something like this would be awesome (as I type on it right now):

http://www.staples.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/StaplesProductDisplay?storeId=10001&catalogId=10051&langId=-1&productId=102485&cmArea=SEARCH

But I do agree with others that buying something that is directly computer related can always be tricky as they may already have something like it, it may not be to their tastes, etc. Still, this has been awesome. :)

I'd likely ignore the request because I think it's weird to be told not only to bring a gift, but what type of gift to bring. Techically, according to etiquette, an engagment party is to announce an engagement, so of course you wouldn't bring a gift because you wouldn't know it was anything other than a party. But, in this case, I'd probably bring something, but it would be completely of my choosing. I just don't like to be told what to buy.

Thank you for all the suggestions! So many great ideas. I am still pondering. I may go with one of your suggestions or I am also thinking about a serving dish (Nambe) with a can of gourmet nuts and saying it is for snacking in the computer room. . . .

Thanks again!
