I'm sure I've seen something here before, but I couldn't get my search to narrow it down...

A good friend is about to have a baby and I'd like to get her something pretty nice. You'd think I could come up with my favorite gift since Sawyer isn't all that old, but I guess I still have mommy brain and can't think of what to get.

I was thinking of a Vermont Teddy Bear with her baby's name on it (she doesn't yet know the sex and so I won't know the name until the baby is born), and although that's cute, I'm thinking it's not so useful/practical and maybe I could find something that's both cute AND practical. Of course I'm also looking for unusual and terrific--you know, just the most amazing perfect gift in the whole entire world. :)

I do have a locket necklace I love from Red Envelope, but I'm thinking I should leave jewelry up to her DH.

We did get a stool/chair with Sawyer's name on it that's pretty cute, and maybe that would be the way to go. I just remember loving having something with my name on it and depending on the name, it's hard to find something personalized (like I'm ever going to find a pen with "Sawyer" hanging in the store!).

But it doesn't have to be personalized...What was your absolute favorite baby gift to give or get?

Debbie

I love our personalized blankie from www.theramp.net/mannmade - her pics on the site just don't do it justice! You can have them embroider just about anything on the blanket. We got a small lovey sized one as a gift for DS, and I ordered a big one with the full embroidery on it. I'll do the same for DS2.

I love to give personalized tote bags from LL Bean (size Large). They can be for laundry, toys, books or whatever! I have the LLBean credit card so it is always free shipping!

Sometimes I like to send a copy of "The Portable Pediatrician" along with some kids books like "Dear Zoo" and Maisy flap books.

this is my new favorite gift... i just gave this and a lovie sized taggie blanket that i made to my dh's brother and wife for their new baby and just ordered another block for my brother's newest addition. i also made her a lovie sized taggie blanket. i also order one for my dd when i make other orders (so now she has her birth block and will soon have her baptism block!) they are 14.95 each i think.

i also agree with pp. i like individualized things, and dd's name is genevieve, so we don't see mass produced items!

have fun shopping!

We received a really nice towel from Pottery Barn Kids (called a bath wrap. It is big and really soft/fluffy. It states for 18m and up, but DD is a chunky gal and we started using it recently. It was personalized with her name (which is not a common name).

Another cute place for personalized gifts is www.mybambino.com

Oh...one more nice gift we got for DD was one of those wooden stools with her name as puzzle pieces.

Just wanted to say that I give these, too... I posted about them somewhere around here in the spring/summer when I received one at ds' birth. They're awesome! :)

My mom got us a personalized book. Our son is the main character, and it also includes personal details like our home address, pets names, names of friends and other family members. It is really cute and special.

You can never find anything "Jude" in a store, so I am all about personalized things. Some favorites:
Name Puzzles- received as gifts
LandsEnd Towel Sets- not hooded, This is my standard gift now
Pottery Barn, LandsEnd and Company Store blankets
The Blanket Lady blankets I like, we received one for each boy
We have JUDE and EVAN trains made with letters
Land of Nod name pictures for the wall- OK, Grandma duplicated one for us : )

I have ordered stickers from the Sunday paper and or Current for books and daycare stuff.

The #1 favorite JUDE thing is the HEY JUDE name plaque we have from a former co-workers retired boat. Sorry, can't duplicate that one for anyone.

Thanks everyone. Everyone had great idea (and some I'll probably be looking into for myself and DS!). I know I always loved having things with my name on them. Not sure it'll be quite the same for a boy, but who knows?

I love the baby blankets from: http://www.twotinas.com/

They are awesome. I think every child needs a blanket of their own that stands out from all the rest, and this has always fit my criteria.

My new thing for gifts for family kids is a personalized piggy bank. I ordered one for Christmas for our newest niece from Korff Ceramic Originals http://korfforiginals.com/all_piggy_banks.html Lots of choices and she makes them herself.

I ordered a My Blankie for our niece's baptism this summer (name Kourtney, will never find that spelling!) and although I haven't seen it in person, it was a hit.

We got a stool with DS's name and it is probably the one gift that is used more than ANYTHING in the house. I'd vote for a stool.
