We are going to Manhattan next week and no vacation is complete without scoping out some cool new baby gear. Where should I go if we are staying on the upper east side? We are taking subways/cabs and I would prefer not to go too far, but I definitely want to see some cool gear (ideally the I'coo Pico or Rock Start Baby strollers). I'd also love to see an Ellaroo Mei Hip carrier if anyone carries it in NY.

Any other must-shop stores in NY? Non-baby?

Thanks,

There's a really cute baby store in Soho called Giggle. I just checked their site www.egiggle.com and it looks like they just opened a store on the Upper East Side (Lexington btwn 73 and 74). The have a fun selection of baby gear, with a modern, stylish bent.
Schneider's Juvinile Furniture (sp?) is also a good store for baby gear. They're on the east side, 25th Street I believe. I bought my Valco there when they were in their East Village location and I think at the time they were the only store in the city to carry Valco.
Unfortunatly, I don't know of any stores that carry carriers really (other than the basics). Its too bad really, they would do well I bet.
There are a couple of good stores in Brooklyn for baby gear, but I'm not sure if you're making the trek across the river at all.
I'll post more if I can think of any other can't miss stores.

Here's a list of Ellaroo Mei Hip distributors:

I've heard about a bf'ing store that has a great selection of stuff - Upper Breast Side or something??? May be a good place to check out other carriers.

you might also try posting on urbanbaby.com - the toddler board has lots of NYC moms. There is also an NYC board.

I went here a couple years ago to check out their sling inventory and buy a Boob shirt - couldn't resist the name. The place is so, ummm, NYC! It's a little off putting for this Chicagoan. The hours are just goofy, and I had to fend off a bulldog of a mother who thought I was making off with "her" unpurchased nursing shirt until I pointed out that it was just the same style and "her" shirt was still safely on the rack next to her. Yikes!

I wish I could remember the name of the store I went stroller shopping in. I believe it was on the corner of 86th and Lexington. It had some great stuff.

When I was pregnant I loved to stroll Madison Avenue. There are lots of really neat baby stores. Some sell just clothes, but others carry great stuff. My favorite is the Wicker Garden (I think that is the name) in the mid 90's and Park.

I know I am not being much concrete help, but just stroll up Madison Avenue and you will find lots of stores.

Have Fun

Buy Buy Baby is a typical chain-store experience...there's a Whole Foods on the next block, too. That's fun if you've never been. Albee is a more interesting NYC experience. Schneiders is pretty good, too.

If you can handle it, Upper Breast Side is a must-do. But it's true what the PP said...one of the women in my childbirth class referred to them as "breast nazis." They do have crazy hours and aren't open on weekends. Call before you go. I loved it though...found it a very warm and supportive environment. When I went to return my pump after 2 unsuccessful months of building supply, the owner told me to give myself a hug and have some chocolate b/c I had done a really great job.

I don't know the UES very well, but there are lots of good places on the UWS. If you go to Upper Breast Side, take a wander up Broadway from there. Hit Zabar's, etc.

Have a great time!
