Is there a place online for cute inexpensive costumes for dress up? The ones I've seen at toy stores are pretty plasticky and the ones online are horribly expensive--I want DS to have several dress-up things for his birthday and I don't want to spend $50 each! I can sew but I don't think I have time to make three.

I thought they would be cheap this time of year, but evidently not! Unfortunately, most of them are also for girls. Agh.

Just one idea for a cheaper alternative:

I'm picking up some hats from kidsurplus.com - pirate, construction worker, firefighter, viking, etc, and pairing them with large playsilks (ordered from Thai Silks). The hats are inexpensive and I think can set the mood quite well, and the playsilks can be made into capes, headdresses, sashes, skirts, etc.

Try a Dollar Store. I saw lots of things around Christmas, and just the other day I saw several boy things, but no girl things. (Darn it!)

And while you're there - pick up a cheap balloon. You can get two latex balloons or one mylar balloon for a dollar. It's my favorite cheap treat for the kids when I feel the need to be a hero. :)

We do the dollar store balloon thing, too. That and the Target pretzel makes DS very, very happy!

If you are not opposed to used items, you can find some really nifty dress up things at thrift stores. I filled a box for my son with real clothes for dress up. I got a lab coat for playing doctor, a plaid blazer, tie, and black loafers for being a banker or office worker, several funky hats, flip flops, a size 7/8 raincoat that looks like a firefighter jacket... And then several dress-up hats from places like Walmart: a red cowboy hat, a construction workers hard hat, a fireman's hat. Then I made him a cape and every year his Halloween costume is added to the pile. Oh, I found a few plush halloween costumes at the thrift store, an alligator and a lion.

I just have this picture in my mind of kids pulling out old clothes out of chest in the attic, real clothes. So I tried to re-create that. And it only cost me about $25.
