Which nominated movies have you seen? Which one are you rooting for?

We saw Brokeback the other night. Undecided whether it's Oscar-worthy, but I KNOW that dude Heith Ledger was excellent...Even DH agreed he was a very believable cowboy :)

We also saw Crash, and again, not quite oscar-worthy in my book. Too happy of an ending, no? Though DH says that moment with the little girl in her dad's arms is forever seared on his skull.

I have not seen the others, though they're all on my Netflix list...

What are your thoughts??

The last movie I saw was Cold Mountain. How sad is that! I am looking forward to seeing Walk the Line. I have a Dr. appt. tomorrow and DH promised me when we get home we are going to rent it. I am excited to watch an adult movie!

I don't think Walk the line is out just yet (perhaps tomorrow?0 It's on our list too.

We also do not get to the movies often, not because of time (We can always catch the 10pm showings after DS is in bed with my sister listening for him), but I am opposed to paying $8/person for a movie, on principle. How sad is THAT!

Yes...It comes out tomorrow. I have been waiting on it so that is why DH promised as soon as we get back from the doctor we can go get it. :)

We have nobody to watch the boys and they really aren't great about letting us watch a movie so it just doesn't happen in our house. Tomorrow we are going to wear the boys out in hopes of them going down early and giving us some free time.

I don't even know what is nominated except for Brokeback Mountain. Crash is nominated?? Well, I liked Crash although it was a little hard to follow at times. I really likied Walk the Line and think Reese should win for Best Actress. I guess I need to look at who is nominated again!

Okay, so where can I find a list of the nominated movies, LOL? The last movie we saw (Netflix) was Lagaan and that was really awesome. I loved it. We haven't seen Brokeback, Crash, or Walk the Line, but I think they're all on our Netflix list (saved). The last movie we saw in the theater was Harry Potter #4. The last movie we saw before that was either Harry Potter #3 or Lord of the Rings #3. How sad is that? :)

I usually use the Oscar nominations to figure out which movies I should put on my Netflix list (if they're not there already)...

What are these things you call "movies"?

If it isn't pumped into my house via DirectTV and then Tivo'd, I will not have seen it. And then, if it is longer than an hour, there is no way I can stay awake through it. Even Netflix doesn't work for us for that reason.

So, no, I haven't seen any nominated films this year. :( Maybe by next year I will have seen a few.

We've gone to LA for the Academy Awards the past two years. This year I will be watching them from my house, but I'm still looking forward to the pre-shows, those are my favorites. I've seen exactly 0 films nominated, next year I have high hopes :).

Oh, thanks for the reminder. ;( x( I lost it at that scene. Screamed. Nearly puked.

I haven't seen many movies this year either. But Terry Gross had the star and writer/director of this movie: Tsosti (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5229479 and http://www.npr.org/templates/rundowns/rundown.php?prgId=13) on today. It sounded so amazing. I really want to see it.

"The Constant Gardener" is sublime (should win for adapted screenplay)!!! Rachel Weisz totally deserves the Oscar for best supporting actress. I saw "Junebug" the other night and thought it was good. Amy Adams was nominated for best supporting as well, and is good, but not as good as Rachel Weisz.

I hope that Matt Dillon wins for "Crash," and Terrence Howard wins for "Hustle & Flow." IMHO "Hustle & Flow" is overrated, but Terrence Howard was excellent (he's also awesome in "Crash"). I loved "Pride and Prejudice" and love Keira Knightley--although I thought her Elizabeth wasn't as strong as the one in them book.

And although I haven't seen "The Squid and the Whale" yet, I want it to win for original screenplay. I really dig Noah Baumbach! Ok, enough of my random thoughts! :)

Same here. Haven't been to a theater since April 2004. I was going to see Harry Potter #3 at the theater but had a baby the day it came out. :( I have not seen a movie in a theater since then. We don't get Netflix and we haven't been to Blockbuster in years.

I get HBO, though, so I've seen a few semi-new movies, but not anything Oscar-worthy.

I have not seen any of the movies nominated in the top catagories. I just don't have the time with all the Netflix-ed Degrassi Junior High and Desperate Housewives I had to watch :P. Or that whole raising a family, working, going to school thing!

Hopefully I will be more in the know by next year. Maybe I will have seen the 2005 movies by the time the 2006 nominees are announced.

I do NEED to see Walk the Line. I love Johnny Cash.

Im really not sure everything that is nominated either. Living in Italy its hard to keep up w/ everything. I LOVED Crash and think it is an awesome movie. I hope it wins something. I also feel that Walk the Line was a Great movie too. (We saw it when we went home on vacation in Nov/Dec). Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon did a Fantastic Job. I really hope Joaquin wins the best actor award. And I will be running out to buy it today. As for Brokeback we didnt get a chance to see it, but I think Jake Gyellenhall is a really good up and coming actor.

For me Crash is hands down my pick for best movie. IMO, it is such an awesome movie on so many levels...showing the good and bad in people, the way our preconceived ideas/prejudices about people affect our interactions....I could go on and on. Plus I think all the actors (and what a cast) did an incredible job.

I've seen quite a few of the movies for the major categories, but not all of them. Of all nominated movies I've seen Crash (obviously), Capote, Brokeback Mountain, Transamerica, Cinderella Man, The Constant Gardener, A History of Violence, King Kong, Harry Potter, Chronicles of Narnia, March of the Penguins, Tsosti, War of the Worlds, The Squid and the Whale, Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, Batman Begins .

Amazingly all but Cinderalla Man and The Constant Gardener were in theatres! Wow when I list them all I guess I need to stop saying I don't get to go to the movies....it's just we used to see A LOT more!

Still need/want to see: Munich, North Country, Good Night and Good Luck, Walk the Line, Syriana, Pride & Prejudice, The New World Memoirs of a Geisha, Mrs. Henderson Presents (maybe).

Once again, may I congratulate you on impeccable taste? :)

We saw "The Constant Gardener" the other night after my IN-LAWS recommended it. Very good.

The Squid and the Whale isn't out yet, it's on our list.

Did you know an Italian movie is nominated for Best Foreign film ("La Bestia nel cuore", which they translated into "Don't Tell". Noone has heard of this here, I had the hardest time even finding it initially, anywhere. I still have not seen it)

Oh, and if you haven't you *must*, and I mean, MUST! see "Best of Youth". I'd love to know who screwed up the US distribuition of this film, it's up there as best film of all time in my book, yet few have even heard about it :( :(.

Do you actually go to the Academyt Award ceremony? Very cool, but I think I'd fall asleep after an hour or so :)

Katie, I am perpetually behind too. Also because we mostly get the indi/foreign ones covered too, so by the time we get to the blockbusters, well, it's 2-3 years past their "season".
Only recently have we started watching more movies, and I like it. Very cheap entertainment (we have the one-at-a-time Netflix for $10 or so), and watch hardly any other TV besides that (until the Sopranos start, then we have to get HBO again, counting the days!).

Ugh. I was up off the couch pacing and DH had his head buried in his hands. We had to stop the movie to recover before we could continue watching.

I took a screenwriting class at Stanford last fall and there was a production assistant from the Squid and the Whale in the class, it sounds like it was an interesting set to be on. She told me not to see the movie because I hate disturbing movies like Breaking the Waves, and for whatever reason she thought I would feel the same way about this one.

Our trip to LA was always just for fun. We had the choice of going to the awards both years, but you have to get there really early, the seats are probably really bad, and its looooong. We decided it would be more fun to not go. It was always an exciting time to be in LA, tons of celebs at our little hotel the first year, we went to Santa Monica for the Independent Spirit Awards and the after party at Shutters on the Beach, and then on the day of the Academy Awards we just watch them in the hotel. After awards we do the cheesiest thing, but it is so fun - I'm almost embarrassed to say it - but we go and stand outside the Vanity Fair party and watch everyone drive up. It is so unlike us, but we happened on it our first year, we were out walking right by our hotel in West Hollywood and there was the party and people arriving. There was only a small group of people watching, so we just stayed. It was so fun we did it again after the awards last year. Hillary Swank held out her Oscar for us to touch, LOL. That is the part I will miss this year, you never know who is about to come up, how they will look in person, and everyone ends up coming. Hmmm, maybe I should just drive down there :).

Eri--

I just added "Best of Youth" to my Netflix queue--I've wanted to see it and needed the reminder.

And here is some brief info about "Don't Tell" (saved it to my queue):

http://www.netflix.com/MovieDisplay?movieid=70045697&trkid=189530&strkid=21983482_0_0

I thought "The Constant Gardener" was haunting. I love films about strong, passionate women! :)

Ok, after you see Best of Youth we should discuss it. I was able to recruit DH to watch the whole thing with me (all 6 hours of it, but we're doing like it was initially for RAI, one hour at a time), but he's not so much into the "processing" part of the movies, LOL :)

Agree about The COnstant Gardener--and it's funny as one of my favorite girl names is "Tess" :)

One review I read said the ending is not for "the faint of heart". Can you spoil it for me so I can make an educated decision on whether I have the stomach (well, obviously we know what happens, but the specifics?) I am browsing thru IMDb reviews now to figure it out...

Thank you!

I have seen Brokeback Mountain, crash and Walk the line. I really want Brokeback Mountain to win for best picture and director for sure. I didn't think crash was oscar worthy. I would like Jake Gyllenhall to win for best supporting actor, Jouaquin Phoenix for best actor and Reese witherspoon for best actress. Whoever wins I am excited for oscar night! Plus I love Jon Stewart so it will be fun to see him host the show.
