Alright quick survey-type question. I wish I knew how to do one of those voting tables but Im still new the question will have to do =).

<?>How many of your ultrasounds were inaccurate on the sex of the baby?

Ive heard stories (Im sure we all have), and Im just a little curious if any of you guys have had experiences w/ Ultrasound inacurracy. My ultrasound said boy at 23 weeks pregnant. In the beginning I had doubts but then came to accept its a boy!! (I had doubts because people questioned my 'gender' pic, saying a certain area didnt look like a boy to them.) Anyways now Im about to start preparing for the birth by washing all the clothes, and getting everything together. Should I rip the tags off and wash the baby boy clothes? Or should I stick w/ the gender neutral for now?

Cant wait to read your response!!!

At 23 weeks, it's very accurate. It's the earlier ultrasounds, like 16-18 weeks where there's a chance it might be a girl, but at 23 weeks, that penis is pretty visible. ;)

LoL. Thanks. That is what I figured, but when I showed ppl the pic they were like 'hmm that looks like an awkard angle to be the pp.' Then my mom was like 'no thats too big that cant be the...' So I got very confused. Thanks for the clarification though, I'll start washing ALL the clothes now. :)

Payton's was accurate (20 or 21 weeks, I think).

However, being the cautious person that I am, I only washed his going-home outfit. Once he was born, my mom washed the rest of the gender-specific newborn clothes while we were still in the hospital.

For DS the Dr said at an ultrasound at 14 wks that if he had to guess it was a boy. At the next ultrasound at @18wks the Dr again indicated that it was a boy and that was correct. I washed all the early stuff since I didn't want to do that after the birth. You have so much laundry to do from them going through clothes fast. But do what you feel comfortable with.

Good Luck!

Ultrasounds are quite accurate but I wouldn't wash all the clothes yet because you just don't know what you are going to use. For both my girls, I washed enough for a couple days but didn't cut the tags off everything until they came and I actually needed them. You just don't know what size clothes they are going to wear and how quickly they will grow out of them. For example, both my daughters ended up wearing preemie clothes for quite a while after they were born. I expected it the second time but totally didn't expect the first time. If I had washed all the clothes, there were some that were seasonal things that would have never got used. I was able to return things we didn't end up using. I also had my mom with me for a few days after delivery so I knew she could wash whatever we needed. My daughter currently wears mostly 0-3m stuff at 6 months! Some babies only wear 0-3m for a couple weeks. So you might want to hold off on washing everything so you don' end up stuck with a bunch of clothes you never use. Just my thoughts.

Thanks. I'll definitely hold off on washing EVERYTHING and just wash a few essentials. My DH can do some laundry if we need more :).
Thank you for the advice.
I really hope he will fit in his clothes it is really difficult to return items in the mail, since I live overseas I have to mail order all my items. So that would be a pain in the butt. Fingers crossed he fits into his clothes during the appropriate season.

Thanks again

Usually, if they say it's a boy, it's accurate. The inaccuracies that I've heard about are when they say it's a girl, and later find that the baby was just hiding his boy parts during the ultrasound ;)

Our ultrasound was done at 18 weeks and the tech was accurate. Me being the person that I am started buying all pink clothes and girl items. Thank goodness she was correct, LOL....

I think ultrasounds in general are very accurate with gender these days. I heard there is better training now, the technology is better, etc. But, it is true that it is much more likely that girl is wrong with the parts hiding. Boy is usually correct, unless there isn't a good view and they would tell you that!

DS #1 we were told at both ultrasounds he was a boy. Actually our very first ultrasound he was shy, and they didn't tell us anything because they couldn't see. I had 2 ultrasounds after that, and one was a few days before my c-section.

DS#2 is also a boy, I'm confident because we had a specialist do my advanced maternal ultrasound (because I'm OLD) and he noted the boy parts and also indicated some other physical structure that is common to boys that he saw (I didn't hear what it was, but he had a broken arm and was educating the sonographer who was moving the device for him while he watched.) He also mentioned tons of different things that he looks for as signs and soft signs of genetic defect, and he seemed to be very, very detailed in everything he looked at.

The tech couldn't tell with Anna, she was mooning us! But he said he was pretty sure it was a girl. For Kieran, I literally had maybe 10-12 u/s. We found out he was a boy, and I asked the doctor (a perinatologist) if he was sure, and his response was most definitely. He even drew a computer graphic circle so that we could see for ourselves. At every u/s after that, the techs/docs always asked us if we knew the gender, because it was so obvious we were having a boy. Kieran was definitely NOT shy!!

Even then though, there are specifics to look for on a girl (I think I've heard it referred to as the "hamburger sign" oddly enough...you can see the labia and vagina so it looks like three parallel lines) rather than just the absence of a penis.

That isn't to say sometimes they don't screw up, but if they truly *see* the girl parts vs. just NOT seeing a penis, I'd feel confident it was a girl, kwim?

DS's US was at 20 weeks and they got a view from underneath his bum while he was in a sitting position. It was blazingly clear to DH and I what we were looking at before the tech even asked us if we wanted to know :) He obviously ended up being a boy :)

I think I washed about 10 outfits before he was born. I left tags on the rest.

Very true... I've heard people say that a sure confirmation for a girl is to see 3 holes. I haven't heard of the hamburger sign! :)
