Hello all,

Long story short - I chair a gourmet club and our next event is "The Foods of Italy". I'm not talking about the Italian American cuisine that we may love and prepare regularly; we are striving to serve a variety of appetizers and desserts that one enjoys either while traveling throughout the penisula or even while dining in the home of Italian friends or relatives.

I am hoping that some of you will have experience with this cuisine and that you'll be able to point me in the direction of some websites to recommend to my team of cooks. If the sites are only in Italian, that's fine because I teach Italian and used to live there.

Thanks for any help you may offer!

Don't know how authentic it is, but I love "Everyday Italian" on Food Network:

For recipes of different regions of Italy go to
http://www.agriturismoitaly.it/indexcucina.htm

There are plenty more. It really depends if you want dishes from a particular region or not. If you have time do a search on http://virgilio.it

Buon appetito.

I second "Everyday Italian" - it's pretty authentic and delicious IMHO. The recipes are easy to follow.
I also recommend "Lidia's Italian Table" on PBS (she has a website w/recipes & several books out).
The cuisine is from the northeast region of Italy (now part of Croatia) and is more old world and simple - also delicious and my 85 yr old grandma is a huge fan. HTH

Hello-

Well I am currently living in Italy, I don't have any specific recipes but I can give you some ideas on appetizers etc. Now I am living in northern Italy (about 45 mins north of Venicia (Venice)) so I have heard that the food is rather different then in the south.
A favorite appetizer of ours is Bruschetta (Brew-Ske-Tah), it is made w/ toasted baguette bread cut into small slice, topped w/ fresh tomatoes, basil, oregeno, paprika, and garlic cloves, mixed w/ virgin olive oil. We also love Capriese (appetizer)it is a frest tomatoes sliced with mozzarella de bufolo cheese. It is a soft mozarrela you can find in a bowl like container in the dairy section, mix w/ fresh cut tomatoes add oregano/basil to taste. To flavor it up a bit you can add balsamic vinegar and olive oil.
As far as main dishes Im not sure I can help you there. We mostly have pizzas up north. They are one serving (supposedly) but are equivalent to a large american pizza. The crust is very thin, and they are made w/ a fresh (not sweet) tomato sauce and topped w/ fresh mozarella cheese and your choice of toppings. They do not use any alfredo sauce here. That is italian-american cuisine.
For desert a big favorite around here is provideros. Im not too sure on the spelling but they are like cream puffs in a ball filled w/ a soft chocolate ice cream (gelato) and then topped w/ the same chocalate gelato. Tiramisu is also very big here.
I hope this helps and I assure you this is all authentic italian cuisine. I wish I could provide recipes for you.
I hope this helps :).

Have fun

Denna
