View Full Version : What is the P/C toddler-friendly term for "fart"?

Java

Kind of weird but it must be asked. What's it called in your household?

K calls it a poo-poo which unfortunately is also what he says when he does #2. He probably got it because when he farts we usually can't tell so we ask "did you poo-poo? It sure smells like you did!" so it sort of stuck.

I'd like to change the terminology so he can distinguish between the 2 (and we don't have to check each time) but "fart" just sounds too much (if that makes any sense).

Thanks!

Ugh. I hate the term "fart." We call them "bubbles." Burps are also "bubbles." We borrowed the term from a friend of a friend, and now the whole neighborhood of toddlers calls it bubbles, too.

We say "toot" although that always makes me wonder if she's confused about songs with train whistles in them... I can't deal with "fart" and haven't found a good solution. If someone passes gas in her presence, though, DD will ask them if they poo-poo'd!

Definitely not a PC term, but we use fartskarini. I think adding "ini" onto most terms comes from my Italian background. Hearing Matthew say it makes me laugh. I know that someday it is not going to sound so cute when he drops the ending. I like "pass gas" so maybe we will start to use that.

I've been calling them toots. My 3yo DD calls them "stinkies". MIL was here for DDs birthday and was calling them "fluffs".

I'd attempt to start saying it's passing gass, but right now that'd mean an endless round of why and what questions from DD, so I'm sticking to toots and stinkies until she gets a little older!

I think it must be what you're used to. For me, bubbles and toot sound way too goofy to say. We always said "fart" growing up, so that sounds much better to me than toot.
However, I've recently been asking friends what they say, b/c I know fart isn't polite. Now we're trying to shift from "fart" to "pass gas."

DS did drop the other f-bomb for the first time not so long ago, so I am a little concerned about what we say around him now. But farting? Not a big deal. If that is the worst thing that comes out of his mouth, I will be shocked.

DD's vocabulary only consists of 5 words right now, none of which describe that! Our nieces and nephews say "poot" as in rhymes with toot. DD poots a lot, and I've found myself asking her "did you just poot" which she finds hysterical. I guess we'll be sticking with that unless she comes up with something of her own.

I am sitting here, needing to go up to bed, but riveted by this discussion (I'm a word nerd anyway), and after reading the word 'fart' so many times here I'm beginning to LOL to myself. This thread is cracking me up.

We used to call them 'boops' growing up in my family. Apparently when I was around 2 or so I said "So...evvvverybody do boops!" That followed me for quite a while. :-)

We say fart around here, but my boys do not talk yet so I guess I have time to decide if we'll stick with farts or not.

The word fart is crass. :-) Doesn't mean we will boycott it though, we'll just have to wait and see.

I looked up fart on dictionary.com and was told that it is considered "vulgar slang".
That's why most of us don't think it sounds nice: It really isn't a polite word :P.

The proper term for it is flatus or flatulence, both nouns.
In its verb form it is called flatulation or to flatulate.
Go ahead and ask junior if he flatuated; I can see why that never caught on.

For those of you who want to know even more about "breaking wind",
I found this interesting: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flatus

And did you all know that some cultures produce professional farters?
For real. Thess performers can produce various rhythms and pitches with their intestinal wind.
http://www.reference.com/browse/wiki/Professional_farter

Thus concludes the daily fart, er flatulence lesson!

Since my son isn't born yet, we haven't had to encoun ter what we are going to call it, however in all the years of childcare that I've done, I've heard lots of terms for fart.

I'm partial to just calling it a fart, but I'm not opposed to calling it a toot. I'm concerned about calling it a fart because we live in New England, and my family tends not to pronounce their "r's". As in- Cah for car, or Jah for jar... so unfortunately fart would come out as Faht. I have fought hard over the years to lose this accent, and would hate for my son to pick it up, but I can see what would happen after he spends a weekend with my folks

"Mah- I fahted in the cah on the way to Dunkin' Donuts. It was wicked funny"

So, I think we may have to go with toot.

Oh well.

My mom always called them foo-foos or foofies (rhymes with poo-poos and poopies), so that's what we use in English. We're a bilingual household, so when using Spanish we say "airecitos" which translates into "little airs." The kids use both!
