I would like to buy a birthing ball in a B&M store. Any recs? Is an exercise ball the same thing? I've tried the boutique and chain maternity stores around here without any luck so far...

It's the same as an exercise ball. I got one at Walmart when I was pg. for about $10 and it worked just fine. In fact I it's lent out to a friend right now and she's using it too! It's in the fitness/sporting goods section.

That $10 was the best investment we ever made, LOL! We didn't actually get a chance to use it when I was in labour with DS1, but we discovered it was the BEST way to get DS1 to sleep when he was a newborn. We swaddled him and sat on the ball in his room and bounced until he fell asleep. With DS2, we did the exact same thing (same ball lasted 4+ years so far). In fact, we went to Israel when DS2 was 1 month old and we bought a (deflated) ball just for our trip and left it there for our friends who were expecting. They also used it religiously when their DD was born!

Best $10 ever spent on baby products!!!

Yup, it is the same as an exercise ball. I bought mine at Walmart. Buy a big one as they come in different sizes. I've also seen them at Ross and Sports Authority.

Our Wal-mart didn't have any of the large sizes, so I bought mine at TJMaxx. It is in the exercise section with the yoga mats and pilates equipment. I think I spent around $12.

As PP's have said they are the same. I would however caution against getting one with nubbies on it. Not sure the techincal term, but I bought so I wouldn't slide all over the place on my hardwood floor. I wouldn't have slid on a regular ball (demonstrated by the ball I used at the hospital on tile) and the bumps drove me nuts!!

I just inflated a huge ball for my son this weekend and I bet it would work. We got it at US Toy. I can't get a link to work so just go to www.constructiveplaythings.com and enter Item #: CPX-625L in the search box.
