Ethan has always been a good sleeper, which I don't take for granted for a second given that Abby didn't sleep for three years. But suddenly in the last two weeks, he is miserable all night long. His belly is hard as a rock and he wakes up a zillion times. I'm exhausted and I can't figure out what's causing this. Help!

Rachel did you just start any solids recently? I just ask cause we just started Miriam on cereal this weekend, and her and Ethan are so close in age. Maybe it's an aversion to food, other than that I have no clues. Is he able to nap during the day?

Rachel, it sounds like gas.
If you started solids, you may want to work with the time of when you give them to him. For example start as far away from bedtime as possible. Or if you give them at noon, try breakfast instead. This is one of the things that worked with my DS, although not all the time. Gas drops may work as well, but they never did much for DS.

I assume you've gone through the standard list?

Teeth?
Ears?
Developmental milestones?
And, of course, as PPs mentioned, solids?

Honestly, if there is no clear cut answer and his tummy is hard, I would talk to my ped. DD ended up needing to go on prescription laxatives at his age. It's rare for a breastfed baby, but not unheard of.

Good luck. Isn't it bizarre to have a good sleeper? DS didn't sleep through the night until 3 1/2, but DD has always done much, much better.

Avery was a good sleeper right from the start, but she also has phases where it all goes to hell for a month or so, and then settles back down. She had some tummy issues for several months right around Ethan's age - not constipation exactly because her poop wasn't hard, but she would go 8-10 days and by day 5 or 6 she was just miserable. We ended up giving her half a suppository once we got to day 6 and then she was happy baby again. I think we did that for a couple of months until she got more into solids which actually seemed to help keep her moving a little more often.

When it happened here it was a new tooth about to pop. Then she suddenly slept 6 hours straight and sure enough, it had started to break through.
