I am not sure if this topic belongs here but here goes....

I am thinking of indoor fun for rainy days. What is the biggest bang for your buck toy you have.

Mine is a cement mixing tub from Home Depot (6 bucks) that is filled with 15 lbs of dried navy beans (3 bucks). Throw in some spoons and measuring cups and you have instant fun.

What other ideas do you guys have?

Empty food containers got a lot of play here at that age. DS would pretend to make oatmeal, pour orange juice, etc. Add a wooden spoon, a wire whisk and a bowl and he was all set.

Books are good for a lot of time and fairly cheap--free if you go to the library, which is a good rainy day outing for us.

DS also likes to make playdough, which is pretty darn cheap--some flour, salt, oil and koolaid.

If it's not too cold, we just go outside anyway and stomp on puddles. Rain boots and a rain coat keep DS mostly dry.

Also, trips to museums, nature center, Target have helped fill many a rainy day.

Great topic. Can't wait to see the responses. I'm so not creative so I don't have many ideas. Rainy days are my excuse to go to the mall (there's a fountain DS loves to run around) or the children's museum. I love your tub o' beans idea.

We never got around to doing the tub of beans, although I know Kaya would love it. On days where we have to stay indoor, she will play with:

Turn on the tub so the water trickles and let her play with various cups and containers. Allow her to strip down to her diaper (or naked) when she does this. She stays on the outside of the tub and has a blast. Sometimes there's water on the outside, but most of the time, she keeps the water in the tub.

Books, books, books!

Blocks--she likes making towers and knocking them down or just making towers.

Drawing with markers and large drawing pad

Go to a playmate's house or invite one over

Go to I Wonder, an indoor play area

Let her play with "Mommy's Lego" with some supervision, although she's pretty good about not sticking them in her mouth--this is a very popular toy for her and she's getting better and better at putting them together.

Hand her the spray bottle of club soda and lime oil extract and have her spray glass surfaces to clean them. Let her spray and you wipe, or let her do both, and then wipe up after her. :)

Household chores as long as they aren't dangerous with a toddler underfoot :-). Here are some examples of things we do.

Cleaning the freezer. I highly recommend the use of a clean trash can, and to empty the bottom drawer first (if there is one.) I hand the stuff I need to throw away to my DS who puts it in the trash. While he is busy putting it in the trash and taking it out to put it in the bottom drawer, I wash the top part of the freezer and work my way down. When I am done cleaning, my DS helps me put the food I am keeping back in the freezer.

Sorting laundry. Loading the washer and the dryer. I just need to make sure all the colors match when I wash.

Cleaning cabinets. Decluttering in the same way I clean the freezer. I just hand DS the things that need to be thrown away.

Besides that we read, play, draw, look outside the window, try to take a nap , and ... it seems like it is always time to eat, eat, eat :-).
