A little over two months ago, DS dropped a heavy toy on his big toe. The toenail turned black and has stayed that was ever since. Well, today I noticed it is coming off. It's just hanging on by a little piece. DS won't let me touch it and I figure I'll just let it do it's thing but I don't know if I need to do anything special to care for it. Will the skin underneath be OK without a toenail to protect it? It sucks because I just got him some cute sandals that he's been wearing everyday but now I think he'll need more foot protection. Any advice?

I had this happen to me when I was a child. I don't recall doing anything special to it, but I was older than Luke. Considering his daredevil age :-), maybe sneakers when he goes out and there is potential for hitting things. You can always call the pediatrician and see what is recommended (i.e. covering it vs not covering it, at home that is).
And yes, don't touch it. It will come off on its own :-).
