DH took our twins for their 4th haircut (who's counting) and their reactions were just as bad if not worse than the last time. I didn't go because DH thought it wouldn't be as bad for them, WRONG! He took them individually on different days to two different locations...still no good. Not to mention at one place the gal was afraid she might nick DS's ear so she left a lot of long strands around his ears and neck. I don't blame her.

That's it, we're doing it ourselves from now on...we think. We bought something called THE PEANUT which is a hair clipper (anyone have this?) and some home grade hair cutting scissors.

Are there any books out there for home hair cutting? How about some of you moms who are doing it yourselves do you have any tips you can share? I guess I can practice on DH ;-)

TIA

I don't know about the peanut, but I am going to admit something here that not even my closest friends know!

My husband uses the Flowbee. Yes, you read it right, the flowbee. It was made famous in the late 80's early 90's with the great infomercial showing how you to can use your vacuum cleaner to cut your hair. I hate to admit it, but it does a really good job. I won't let him near my DS with it, but if I were being honest it would probably do a good job.

After getting sick of almost paying more for DS's cuts than mine (because his were happening 3x as much!) I got a Wahl clipper kit with a bunch of guards (I think 12?). Not the peanut, but works GREAT. I just trim his hair all 1 in (its straight, and not very thick) and then use the tapered guards for around the ears, and then trim his neck a little closer if I can. He sits soooo still, and it takes less than 10 minutes! Its not a buzz cut, but a little longer. And I can tell when he needs another cut, because it starts to stick up all the time LOL.

We use a clipper on DS's hair too! We just put a #1 guard (I think) and clip it all one length all over. Then I take DH's beard trimmer and clip the sideburn area, ears and the back of his neck closer! DS had two haircuts before we just decided to do it ourselves.... he is not very into having haircuts!

Good Luck

My DH has been using a Robocut since shortly after we married, and loves it -- well, I use it on him, that is. I think it is similar to a Flowbee but with a smaller cutting area, maybe? It actually does quite a nice job, even in the hands of a woman who never learned to use a blowdrier or curling iron! The blade area is protected, so there is no risk of accidents. Plus it came with a little training video and booklet. It is the only way he would ever get me to cut his hair -- no way I would approach his beautiful head of hair with scissors!

DS had reactions at the barber similar to your twins, even though the barber was great - had a booster seat for him, very charming, tried to put DS at ease, etc. So after trying two more times, we gave up and have cut his hair ourselves since. We bought clippers with the guards, and while I'm definitely not an expert, it looks pretty good. The first time, I "cut" DH's hair (pretended) while DS watched, then we had DH hold DS in his lap, turned on the Wiggles (his favorite show at the time) and I cut his hair. He whimpered a little, but it worked out fine. The next time it was a cinch. Good luck!

Actually, our friends have been using it to cut their son's hair and the husband's hair for a while and it seems to work quite well. I think they won't do their DD's hair with it, though, because they want her to have longer hair. So they just trim her bangs. Their kids are 2 years old and the son doesn't seem to mind it at all.

I'm so impressed with all of you. I was the resident hair-cutter in college, but I'm scared to go near my kids' hair.

My DH usees a Flowbee too! His dad started using one ages ago. He's a huge fan and has been known to pull it out at parties and demonstrate how great it is! It works great for DH. He hasn't had a "professional" haircut in years.

My DS hates to have his hair cut. We've tried every local kids' hair place, but he screams and cries and almost always gets a terrible hair cut as a result. So, we bought a Wahl clipper kit. We do an okay job. I always fixate on every imperfection. I'm hoping he'll eventually get over his fears so that I can take him every few months for a good cut and then just use the Wahl kit for maintainance.
