View Full Version : Which vitamin does your DC like?

I want to give DD vitamin everyday since she's a picky eater. I started with polyvisol, but she hates the taste. I have to mix it with a little juice, but she usually doesn't finish it. I just bought a bottle of flintstones complete and gave her a half of a tab. She acted like I was trying to poison her after she tasted it. She wouldn't take it the next day. She politely gave it to me and said "mommy eat" - she would never do this with her snacks. Which type of vitamins does your DC enjoy? I wish they make vitamins that taste like chocolate.

Thanks!

None! I think we've tried them all. The best luck we've had is to crush a Flintstones Complete and mix it in with some applesauce or something similar. We average getting about 3 in her a week. Sometimes we end up getting an entire tablet in her one day and can't get any in her for days. So, we take what we can get.

My DS LOVES the My First Flintstones. They are meant for children ages 2-3. He asks for one every morning without fail!

Ds likes the little animal ones from Trader Joe's. He really loves the gummy calcium bears (as do I :o ). I used to try not to give him some with any sweeteners in them, but dang it if those aren't SO flippin' expensive at Whole Foods and require a cup or something and this way at least he gets them.

try the gummy bear ones.... GNC carries the Rhino Brand! These were the first vitamins my DS took and he loved them!

now he is taking Nutristars by Rainbow Light... we get them at Whole Foods! They have a whole line of chilrens vitamins including powder that can be used from 6 months and up. Check out their site

DD likes any of the gummy vitamins. We were using the Disney/Pooh ones because she loves Pooh, but had a coupon for One A Day Scooby ones at the next trip.

We keep her seated and she chews well and even with the sugar and the coloring, eh, it's only once a day. The only bad thing switching vitamins was she was used to eating two and now only gets one. She is always wondering where her second gummy went. :)

DS is extemely picky, but loves these Flintstones vitamins as well. DH bought a big bottle of gummy vitamins from Costco and I ended up eating those :)

We've had the best luck with the gummy ones too. I know with my dd the problem with the others is that they're too tart for her liking. Her reaction was very similar to your dd's. :)

We just went through the same issue. DS tested low for iron recently so we had to find a vitamin he would take. He hated the chewables we tried, even disguised with food. I don't like the idea of gummy vitamins (and I never found one with iron, though someone told me that there is a Flintstones gummy with iron) I did a search of the boards in Feeding and found a recommendation for Schiff Children's Multivitamin Liquid.

http://www.schiffvitamins.com/productsearch_results.asp?p=143

DS took it right out of the medicine dropper and has ever since with no problems, but it can be diluted in food or juice. It is citrus flavored and he really seems to like it. It doesn't stain or smell like that nasty Poly-Vi-Sol either! The website has a product locator and I found it at a local grocery store.

just a thought--is it big enough that you could cut in in two pieces?? "pooh's head and pooh's feet" or whatever might work with my DD...

I also give my daughter the My First Flintstones vitamins.
(These are the vitamins that her pediatrician recommended to me.)

When can she go to a regular Flintstones vitamin??

And, how are they different?

We use some gummy ones. Heck, I wish I had had gummy prenatals vitamins!

We use the Trader Joe's vitamins that come in the clear bear-shaped bottle. They're one of the only ones I could find that didn't contain aspartame (check your labels). All of the Flintstone vitamins, except the "My First" ones, contain aspartame.

I think my kid is well on his way to pill addiction of some sort: We have the Rainbow Stars ones, which you may know taste *nasty* and smell horrible too (no added flavors/colors I think) and Erik asks for them like it's candy...Major tantrum daily because he wants them more than once a day, goes and opens the fridge and brings the bottle to us. I am completley baffled by it. Long way of answering you, sorry :)

Wow, can you send some of his tastebuds our way? The Rainbor Stars ones Kaya has taste kind of like fruit punch though. But she doesn't like candy (or cake), so maybe that's why she won't eat them? She will eat dried fruit, so maybe I should try some gummi ones. Do you want the rest of Kaya's bottle? :)

They are both chewables. The Flintstone Complete has several different fruity flavors, but DD doesn't like it. DD also isn't into candies (but loves chocolates). I guess I could try the gummy bear ones.

Thanks ladies!

I'm totally guessing here but since the Flintstone Complete have iron in them and I don't think the regular ones do, I bet they don't taste the same. That iron is nasty. When we do manage to get DD to take one, I can smell the iron smell like from the Poly-Vi-Sol with iron. Anyone know of a gummy one with iron? I'm not even sure that would be possible.

I think Flintstone Complete contains aspertame, but not My First Flintstones. Isn't aspertame a big no-no, especially for kids?

After a lot of trial and error (and $$) it turns out my son did not like any of the chewables. So we're using the gummy vitamins from Whole Foods (Rhino, I think). I remember reading here that the Little Critters that they sell at Target and Costco were found to contain lead...not sure if things have changed, but you might want to do a search about it.

Also, do any of you give your kids the Juice Plus gummies? Its supposed to contain 17 servings of veggies and fruits! Two people recommended them to me....just wondering about them!

Thanks!

Hmm. Is it the same ones? The only thing I recall them tasting is a bit tart, and when he starts chewing/licking them they turn an awful-looking and smelling yellow...The kid LOVES them!! "Stars!! More stars!!" with such desperation in his voice... LOL

We use Animal Parade chewables in orange flavor. The dose is 2 chewables a day for age 4 and up so we just give him 1 a day. He loves them. I get them at my local natural foods co-op (i.e., a Whole Foods type of place).

Just a note that many kids vitamins contain aspartame as the sweetener.
I've only been able to find the "my first flintstones" and the ones we get as a prescription from the doctor don't have it in it and use sucrose or what not as the sweetener.

I know some people aren't as fanatic about this kind of stuff as I am. ;)
But I just thought I'd point it out since most people don't know that something like childrens vitamins can contain something like that in it.

Also, be careful with the gummy vitamins - They're very "candy" like and can confuse a child into thinking that they are candy and not vitamins.
I knew a child who had a mild "overdose" of the gummy vitamins because she ate them like they were candy gummybears!

Age 4 for regular kid vitamins. The MFF have a smaller dose than the regular ones. Typically you can break/cut a regular kid vitamin in half, but I am all about convience so I just get the MMFs though cutting them in half is a lot cheaper.

I'm giving my non-veggie eater half of a multivitamin-grape- I found at a Health Food store. My veggie eating DS will not touch his half so I crush it and add it to his morning oatmeal.

Hmm...I've never actually tasted them myself, since I have my own prenatals. But DH has. I'll have to ask him what they tasted like. :) That's so funny that Erik loves his stars so much. I was hoping that Kaya would too because she loves pointing out stars and starfish, but alas, that is not to be.

Ooh, good idea! I doubt my DD would even notice that the two pieces are smaller than the one regular vitamin! She just knows that she used to get two, and now only gets one. And she doesn't even look at the shape of the vitamin. She just knows it comes out of the bottle with Pooh on the front!
