My boyfriend just got into University of Virginia law school! It's the 8th ranked law school in the nation and he's been on their waiting list for about two months now. The dean of the school just called him at his work and let him know he's one of the first to get off the wait list! The dean said he really stood out because he had sent in a letter and then an email saying he was honored to be on the wait list and even if they let him in 6 months from now he would still go.

So, anyone live in Charlottesville or nearby? I've never even been to the east coast ever (I'm in San Diego) and know nothing. Is it a good place to live with a child? Good preschools? I looked up some apartments already and all I know is that it's a LOT cheaper than here and we can probably get a much bigger place with a lot more anemities than we could ever afford here. It cost like $1200 here just to get a 1 bedroom apartment and some don't even come with a dishwasher or washer and dryer! My boyfriend has even talked about buying a house for the 3 years that we're there (he wants to work in Los Angeles after law school), but I'm not sure how serious he was about that. We'll be going out in July to look for places to live. So now I have to hurry up and make sure I get all of my doula certification stuff done by the time I move out (December) so I can move my business over there.

ohmigosh ohmigosh!! yay!!! you will LOVE LOVE LOVE it.

i don't live there now, but i was born there and lived there for 18 years!! (until college.) my parents, sister/brother in law and brother all live there so we are up there all the time!

how great that it is inexpensive for you! it is VERY expensive to most of us east coast folks!

whiny baby, so i gotta run. more later. but it is GREAT for kids. look at st mark's preschool. right near the university. i went there!!! my mom worked with preschoolers through her job until last year and she said it is STILL a great place- one of the best.

Welcome! We live in Maryland, so we'll be "neighbors". We are also recent transplants from the West Coast, and we love it out here. Good luck on finding a place to live, the housing prices are a little nuts around here. We happened to find a two bed/two bath apartment up here for around $1200, but it took my dh a week of looking around to find it. It's slightly gheto (sp?), but clean and safe. I think there is some housing to be found but it takes some time looking. Most small to medium sized houses here start at $400,000. Um, yeah. We'll be in an apartment for a while! ;)

Another C-ville person here. :) There are several of us on BBB. It is a great place to live. I've been here for 11 years and don't ever plan to leave.

Congrats to your boyfriend. The law school is very good. If you decide to rent, you might want to look into Ivy Gardens apartments. Lots and lots of law and Darden (graduate business) students live there. If you decide to buy, you might want to check out the Charlottesville Area Association of Realtors web site. You can search for properties there. www.caar.com

Welcome!

ETA: Here is another link with info about midwives and doulas in town, since I know you are working to become a doula.

I'm in northern Viginia, closer to DC, so I don't know much about C-ville, but it's not very far away from here. Maybe sometime all of us VA and MD moms can get together!

My MIL and step-FIL live in C-ville and love it. We visit every now and again and just LOVE the area. DH and I also lived in DC for a few years - a nice metro area to be near with all kinds of great things for kids.

Congratulations and good luck!

We've had a sorta active Cville chapter of the BBB for a year or so - we've met for lunch, etc. Welcome! My neighbor just sold her townhouse as she graduates from law school - she made quite a bit of money just owning for three years. The housing market might be slowing a little but demand has been high for years as people always move in to town for the University. Buying a house may be very doable for you.

We love living here although it's going to feel quite small to you coming from San Diego. Eat the good Asian food now while you can because that's one serious deficiency here. And congrats to your boyfriend! I'm hoping someday my husband will be enrolling at UVA law!

Like Amy, I'm in Northern Virginia also. We should plan a get-together one day!

Thanks everyone, now I won't feel so alone. We'll definately have to plan a get-together one day. Karen (american_mama) sent me a super long detailed email about Cville that had a ton of great info (including homebirth/doula/birth stuff). Thanks again, and I'll definately be asking more questions as time goes on.
