I had an "advanced age" ultrasound at a hospital.

Charges from the hospital - $527.50 - after discount $332.33
Charges from the doc - $356 - after discount - $214.

I understand that the doc is a specialist, but $527 for use of an ultrasound machine and a 1/2 hour appointment?

Does this sound right at all?

Thanks,

We were billed around $450 for a run-of-the-mill 20 week ultrasound. I assume the doc was included. HTH!

Interestingly our insurance doesn't cover it b/c there was supposedly no medical reason for it- interesting how these things go!

The bill doesn't have much detail, but I've got a call into the hospital to see.

I'm relieved to hear the costs might be in-line with others, though. So much of the time, I have no idea if the costs are appropriate or not. Medical is so vague about costs.

I just happen to have one of my many u/s bills laying around - $550 for a run of the mill u/s.

ETA: Just wanted to add that the $550 is the charge from the hospital, not necessarily what i have to pay, and I do go to a high risk practice so the u/s are read by my perinatologist (maybe that increases the price??)

Sounds kind of high, but considering how much hospitals tend to charge for things, it doesn't sound surprising.

I don't know how much the hospital charged for our 7 ultrasounds, but I'm sure it cost more than what we paid at a retail place that did a 3d ultrasound and gave us copies of the entire thing, and still photos. (It cost $125...) You can't tell me that the hospital has to charge 3 times that amount.

Oh well...there's nothing we can do about it anyway.
