UPDATE: Yep, it's the chicken pox. :( Since Sean has been vaxed, the doctor says it will probably be a mild case. He may be back at school on Monday, assuming the pox have crusted over by then. And Katie is protected by my antibodies, but we should try to keep them apart as much as possible. Sigh. DH is taking the rest of the week off work so he can help. I've only got two weeks of maternity leave left. This is *not* how I wanted to spend any of it. The pediatrician said that Sean probably wasn't contagious on Sunday when we were at the party, but we need to tell SILs and get the word out so the other parents can watch their kids.

Katie and I are going to head out soon to pick up oatmeal bath stuff, Benadryl, ice cream, and other treats.
--------------

Please send some good thoughts my way if you have any to spare. Sean has been vaccinated against chicken pox, but a little girl in his class at daycare who was not vaccinated had a RAGING case. She's back at shcool now with all the scabs. Her mom had shingles. We noticed two little spots on Sean last night and are taking him to the pediatrician later this morning to get checked out. I am worried about Katie getting them. She will be ten weeks old tomorrow, but was a month early. I am hopeful that IF Sean does have the pox, he will have a mild case since he was vaccinated. I am also hoping that Katie will be protected through my immunities. I am breastfeeding her and I think she is young enough that she still carries antibodies in her blood that she received from me before she was born.

I never had chicken pox as a kid or I had such a very mild case that it went unnoticed since my brother had a bad case. I've been exposed numerous times (including from a good friend and a boyfriend in college) and had my blood tested for antibodies just before we started TTC the first time. The antibodies were present in my blood, so I didn't get vaccinated.

Also, we were at my nephew's first birthday party on Sunday and there were lots of kids that we could have exposed if Sean has the pox. There were at least 5 or so kids around a year old who probably haven't been vaxed yet. And my SIL is around eight weeks pregnant. DH thinks she had chicken pox as a kid, but isn't positive. I don't want to worry her until we know for sure.

Jerilyn, I'll be keeping my fingers and toes crossed for you! If anyone in your family does come down with the pox, I hope that their case is mild and brief. Big hugs!!

I'm sorry you have it! We just went through the pox with both boys. DS2 got it first after DH had shingles - it was not a mild case, but not super severe (he was 11 mos). We did oatmeal baths to keep him clean (they were all over his diaper area) and benydryl two nights.

Then two weeks later DS1 got them. He is the same age as Sean and vaccinated. His was really mild - about 10-12 spots and they were crusted over in about 3 days. If I didn't know what to look for I would have never known he had them. We really didn't do any kind of treatment for him as they never seemed to bother him.

What a mess for you. Let's hope Katie can stay pox free and you can sort of enjoy your last weeks of maternity leave.

Ugh. Again, I'm crossing everything for you. I hope that Sean recovers quickly, and that Katie doesn't get it. The last 2 weeks of maternity leave are busy enough without having to deal with all of this! Email me if there's anything I can do...

Jerily, yikes for the news. Kaylin had a mild case of the chickenpox last month too. I hope it helps to know that Kaylin did great with the chickenpox. They were so mild that she didn't seem to notice them or complain. We used oatmeal baths and some motrin to help her sleep at night. We didn't need anything else.

Hopefully Katie will be have enough antibodies from being so young and also from your breastmilk that she won't get them. Hugs to you and your family. I'll send you some get healthy vibes this week!

Thanks for the good thoughts everyone. So far, it's not bad. Sean is still in a good mood, took a two hour nap today, and has no fever. He's got ten or fewer spots right now and I can see that the first spots are progressing. I am keeping my fingers crossed that it will be as easy as this for a few days and then be over. I picked up a couple of new videos and a new book for him while I was out getting supplies since I feel sorry for him, but he doesn't even realize he is sick. He did crow like a rooster when I told him that he had chicken pox. Maybe I should put squeeze him into his rooster costume from last Halloween to take a pic? Nah, that might be too cruel. ;)

They peak about the third or fourth day, so if you only have about 10 now, he may get off easy.

Also, the ones that appear later don't progress to the super-nasty blisters like the first ones. The very first ones turned into really nasty looking pox, so I was waiting in horror for DS2 to turn into this blister covered baby. But the ones that he got on days 3-5 (mainly on his face and scalp) never got beyond looking like mosquito bites. I wish someone had told me this ahead of time - I was sure he would be scarred for life. :-)
