Edited to update

Well I went ahead and headed into the ER last night and thankfully they were not very busy so we got seen quickly. It turned out to indeed be a blood clot, but it was not in the deep vein system so I'm just taking medicine to treat it and I'm supposed to take it easy for a few days and it should get better. I'm glad I didn't wait to go in because I would have just gotten more and more scared and it could have moved from the peripheral veins into a deep vein and traveled around my circulatory system. The doc said it doesn't normally progress into DVT, but since it is possible, we're taking care of it anyway. No word on what might have caused it. I've been having some health problems that I just haven't checked up on yet and I'm definitely going to do that now. Thank you all for your advice! It really helped to be able to come on here and talk to some cool heads to help me make a decision. And I'm really glad that everything is going to be fine! Thanks again to all of you!

Congrats on your husband's cancer free year!

Now back to you-
Bug bite? I have a huge bite from a black fly on my leg...looks like a tumor.
Muscle Knot?,

Try not to worry too much about it- Get some rest and let the doctors deal with it. Chances are it's nothing.

Keep us posted anyway!

If it's hot and red, it could be a DVT - Deep Vein Thrombosis (blood clot). I would go to the ER immediately if that's the case.

No redness or hotness, but there is what looks like spider veins near the area. I've never noticed them before but seeing as i've gained about 70 lbs in the last year I'm not surprised if that's exactly what they are.

Well, crap that is not what you needed to have happen to you. I am sure it is nothing, but as a professional worrier I know that it is hard to believe that without talking to a doctor. Need I remind you that googling is a bad idea!! Keep us posted.

well at this point I'm in full freak out mode. I think it's probably a bite of some kind but I have no idea if i should go to the ER or not. My leg is starting to cramp all over so it's getting worse.......the area that is hardening underneath my skin also appears to be getting larger. I dont know what that means...

Meg-

For peace of mind, head to the ER. On the plus side you and I know cancer does not progress like that so you can take that off of your list. I too, think it is some sort of bite and could stand to be looked at sooner rather than later.

I'm sorry you're having to worry about this - if it were me and it was getting worse or spreading I'd go to the ER or urgent care. Of course I'm such a worry wart, and searching the internet doesn't ever help! It sounds to me like a bug bite or perhaps a benign infection like a cyst or something. I hope it starts getting better so you don't have to worry about it.

Take care!

As the PP said, it can't be cancer. However, you should head to the ER right away to get it checked!!

My first thought was a DVT as Marisa mentioned. It's certainly nothing to mess with if it is. Please keep us updated when you can. I really hope it's something minor and that you'll be feeling better soon! Take care,

Oh good, I am so relieved to hear that everything is going to be ok.

OK now for the little pep talk I think you might need. Don't forget to take care of yourself! It is way too easy for us mamas to let our health and needs be put on the back burner. Now is the time to put your needs first and get yourself healthy!! (Alright I'll admit that might have been more of a lecture than a pep talk :), but I just couldn't help myself!)

Here's a good website about DVTs. I heard David Bloom's Widow speak about the subject. She has been quite active with them.
(He was a journalist that died in Iraq from a pulmonary embolism from a DVT)
