I know I'm one of the world's biggest dorks. I am actually excited that we are getting a riding lawnmower. Its being delivered on Monday. I want to use this as an opportunity to get an MP3 or Ipod or whatever so that I can listen to my tunes while mowing the yard (and DH watches all 3 kids!). Anybody have any recommendations? We're going shopping tomorrow and I may say this is my Mother's Day present. : )

I just bought a refurb ipod - it's the "u2" model from store.apple.com. The refurbs are tons cheaper (40% - 50%) than the "new" ones!

This may sound like a stupid question, but are there things that are a combination MP3 and PDA? Edited because I researched and see that there are PDA's that play like MP3s. Does anybody know if they are as good or which ones are recommended?

I have an iPod shuffle (freebie gift from my employer) and love it.

And may I add, I think that mowing the lawn on a riding mower while listening to Grown Up music sounds heavenly! I would be on there for hours!

I bought my DH a refurbished IPod Photo through the Apple website. He's been very happy with it. You would only need one with so much disk space if you are going to download say most of your music collection onto your MP3 player. A nano can do something like 500 songs which is still a lot more than many people need. A shuffle can do even fewer (not sure about that one). A lot of people feel that Ipod anything is a ripoff and that you are paying for the brand but that there are other better ones out there for less. DH is actually sort of into name brands so I just went ahead with the IPod but you can find out more at cnet.com.

BTW, I don't think it's dorky to be excited about your ride-on lawnmower. Heck, I'M excited that you're getting one! I would so be there if our lawn were bigger but I don't even think we could turn one of those around on our teeny tiny lawn :)

FWIW, I hate buying into the latest fads or trends and made DH wait FOREVER to get an iPod. However, we both got them last year (both of ours are now obsolete, of course...he has a 40GB photo and I have a mini) and I LOVE my iPod. It saves my sanity on the bus to work every morning...I don't have to listen to the annoying people on their cell phones. :)

As to the question of PDAs that play MP3s...it's possible that the quality may not be as good. I'd go with the pp's suggestion to check out cnet.com. They have a lot of good info.

DH got a Zen (MP3) for Christmas from his dad and I really like it because there is no disc involved, so it's tiny and you don't have to worry about skipping (I have no idea how the Ipod works, but someone on another board reported skipping). The only thing is that I found the earphones that came with it to be uncomfortable, so we'll be getting replacements.

I am not that familiar with all the ones that are out there, so there may be other things that are much better, but we've been quite happy with our Zen.

I have an ipod nano and use almost exclusively at the gym. I love it!

I got the iPod Nano for DH for his birthday this year, and he loves it! There are three versions out there. It's about the size of a credit card, and with a thin profile, too. We saved $50 by getting the 1G version. I spent the $50 I saved on a Sennheiser headset as a companion gift:

I have a Treo, which is PDA/cell/mp3 and a bunch of other things. I really like it, especially since I have one thing to carry instead of multiple things.

There are other PDAs that can be mp3 players. You need one that can take an extra memory chip and has an audio jack, but thats most of the higher end PDAs these days.

If you're planning to listen to music while mowing the lawn, you may need better earphones than an MP3 player will come with. I'm thinking of the ones that block noise as well as playing the music. Unless, of course, riding lawnmowers are a lot quieter than I remember them being.
