The article says: "Programming for Babies to Premiere Amid Criticism
BabyFirstTV's creators say the channel will aid interaction between infants and parents. A group of pediatricians disputes such claims."

And "The round-the-clock channel is called BabyFirstTV. For $9.99 a month, it is available initially by satellite through DirecTV and later through cable TV providers as well."

I just noticed this channel in our line up the other day and watched it for a bit to see what it was about. My honest thought was oh good, now there's a whole 24/7 channel of mindless junk for babies to be entranced with. ;) Most of the programming does seem to be very Baby Einstein-ish in format. But I really feel sorry if there are actually parents out there who need to read the instructions provided on their TV screen as to how to interact with their babies. (insert eye roll here)

Best thing I can say about it is that it at least doesn't have any commercials or the "this-program-sponsored-by...but-this-isn't-an-ad" BS that even PBS has these days.

I flipped by this (or something like it) the other day in our TiVo. When I saw 'Baby' my first thought was a channel with programs about babies. I flipped over and it was a picture of a spinning mobile to music.

ACK! Even the mainstream AAP doesn't recommend it for children under 2!

This is profoundly disturbing.

"Interaction between infants and parents" is best supported by parents, um, actually interacting with their infants - NOT watching TV with them. Ugh!

This kind of reminds me of some Leap Frog reading toy that came with a DVD. The kid was watching the DVD and using a "pencil" tool to press buttons on key words. It worked something like a video game. There was text, but each word would light up as it was being read aloud. His sister came in and said angrily "You've been reading all afternoon! It's my turn!" My first thought was, that kid is NOT reading.
