Is there such a thing as nail polish that doesn't have all the chemically stuff in it? You ladies seem to be such a wealth of beauty info. I thought I'd ask about this here too!

I love using lacquers like OPI, but I've noticed quite a few of the lacquers still have "known by the state of CA to cause cancer, birth defects, etc." type warnings on them. I avoid using any of those, but I'd love to know if there are some more "natural" nail polishes out there!

TIA,
Jennifer

Hi Jennifer,

I recently purchased some polish from Aquarella for those same reasons. I really like it so far after two applications.

That sounds pretty good (love the no smell factor), thanks for the link. Out of curiousity, did you do the conditioning steps they talk about in their instructions, or did you just use the polish?

Also, how is the drying time? My DD loves to have her nails polished when I do mine (hence another reason I'm looking for a less chemical polish) but if it's not fast drying she'll make a mess of it as sitting still just isn't in her nature.

TIA,
Jennifer

I've been wondering this myself. OPI ruined my toenails last year (they turned brittle, yellow and actually cracked), and after some searching I learned that they are listed #1 on the skindeep site for chemical concerns http://www.ewg.org/reports/skindeep2/search.php?nperpage=10&main_cat=NAIL+CARE&category=Nail%20Polish&stype=brands&sort=score

I will never use them again.

I would love to learn about some healthier polishes!

I just bought some laquer style polish from WHole Foods that works as well, if not better, than Opi. It is not completely natural, but has no toulene, DBP or formaldehyde

I've also heard good things about this one

The price is far easier to stomach than the Aquarelle one! THey have a peel off and non peel-off version.

Sadly in my mommy life I don't get to do toes and fingers much anymore ;)

I do at the very least look for Toluene and Formaldehyde free formulations, but there are still lots of other yucky things in there usually.

Thanks for the links. I was going to check on my next WF shopping trip to see if they had anything. Can the stuff you bought at WF be removed with regular nail polish remover?

I thought the conditioning steps were a bit confusing. Here's what I did & it worked just fine:

I used regular polish remover to take off some OPI polish that I had on. Then I waited about 3 days & used the Aquarella buffer & remover. I rinsed & dried my nails. Then I applied two coats of the polish.

I have only tried it on my toenails - I don't bother w/my fingernails. It went on easily & lasted several weeks before I removed & reapplied. I see no difference in performance or ease of use between this and regular nail polish (Revlon, OPI, etc.). I'd say the drying time is comparable to regular polish. I've always put it on when I know I can be barefoot around the house for several hours though - can't be sure what would happen if I rushed it.

FWIW, I bought a light pink shade.

Hope this helps a bit.

Yep, regular is fine, but when I run out I'm getting something less toxic :) I"m really happy with this stuff (No Miss) I got a really pretty pink color and did my pedi about 2 weeks ago and it still looks fantastic - hardly faded or chipped at all!
ETA - with no top coat. Just 2 coats of color.
